What's Spinning

The agutierrezb 2019 record collection challenge

So I've decided to embark on my own personal challenge, which consists of listening every record in my collection before the end of the year. My record collection is not that big -only ~250-, but I still feel like there are a bunch of records I don't give enough attention to, while still adding more titles to my shelves.

For this reason I've set a couple of rules in order to play every record at least once before December 31st: I'll play at least one record a day, going from front to back in the way I have them sorted in my shelf. I can play a different record (i.e. Not the next one in alphabetical order) if I feel like listening to something else in any given moment, but at least one of the records I spin in the day has to be the LP in turn.

I didn't take pictures for the first two days, but I'll try to document the process from here on, so I'll be posting daily on this thread. Wish me luck!
#124: John Lee Hooker - It serve you right to sufger

When I was in my teens I listened to some blues, specially virtuoso guitar kind of blues, but I soon lost interest in the genre in favor of more "complex" and "refined" kinds of music (that's what silly 19yo me thought). So when this record was reissued by VMP I wasn't really excited, since Blues seemed then to me like a bland genre where all artists sounded the same. I actually didn't buy this album, because I wasn't interested in it, I won it in a raffle they did.

Yet, for some reason, this record grabbed me from the start. There is something in the performances that made it sound so unique and authentic to me, in spite of following the well-established formulas of the genre. This has sent me down a path of blues rediscovery, where I have grown to appreciate and understand the genre more and more. I have yet a long way to go in my Blues studies, but this record right here sure was a key turning point in them.

Saw someone post that this existed and was on sale at Cracker Barrel. I was over 2 hours late getting home from a client 100 miles away, and since there was a CB near the exit on my way, I hopped off and looked. Got the last one. I expected it to sound lousy, but it’s a good press. Half green, half red vinyl. I don’t spin a lot of xmas music, but I have a special place for this one.

Afrosound - La Danza de los Mirla

Colombians seem to love a good cheesecake cover and this is by no means the most egregious one I've seen. Still, the music is very funky (even if a little close to muzak sometimes). There's something about Colombian music that I just love (whereas I've found Brazilian music harder to get into) - possibly the language (although my central American Spanish isn't what it used to be), maybe also the west African influence is pretty obvious. Anyway, Discos Fuentes is now one of my favourite record labels anywhere, cheesecake or not.
