I haven’t spent as much time with the Adia as I should, because I’m waiting on that vinyl!
I haven't listened to the Allison Russell record yet. I have listened to Amythyst Kiah a few times...but it just didn't grab me outside of "Black Like Me" and "Firewater"....I was so excited for it and it juts didn't land....it might eventually. This year was a different year for me musically, I ususally listen to so much new music and I kinda retreated to old favorites or just not listening to music at all. I've been having some trouble with tinnitus and music is not as fun as it used to be
Turn down the volume and wear ear plugs at concerts, kids...

Thanks. I was listening to Kimbrough’s Christmas EP the other day. I’ve been on a finger style acoustic guitar kick of late. A new (to me) favourite in a similar vein is Andy McKee.

I listened to the Adia Victoria album for the first time last night, had not heard of her before but wow another discovery through this forum its great, whats the score with the vinyl, its not for sale yet anywhere over in the UK apart from Juno records but not until next March

I'm just going to go with 10 I enjoyed for 10 a piece because I don't think I listened enough to rank fairly. I'm skewing it a bit more towards albums that I don't think are getting as much love as I'd like though I do have some more universal picks here too of ones I really enjoyed near the top
Lucy Dacus - Home Video (10)
If you made me name an AotY it'd be Home Video: I feel like she's been great for half a decade now but Home Video is definitely her "level up" more intense, personal songwriting, more developed musicality and storytelling, and a sense of confidence that wasn't necessarily there on her first two albums. A song like Thumbs, which is a real contender for song of the year, has been in her lyrics book and live sets for years but it found its perfect place here. I also think it's pretty much rock solid beginning to end, which is where an album like Julien Baker's Little Oblivions missed out for me.
Lorde - Solar Power (10)
I know that a lot of people were down on this release, and it does have its flaws, but I still think a lot of the disappointment stems from Lorde making the album that felt right to her as opposed to what people thought Lorde would or should be doing. I don't know how time will treat this one, but Solar Power is still a complete jam, and there's enough really good tracks on there (Fallen Fruit, Mood Ring, Helen of Troy), among others) that it offsets some of the sameness near the end of the album.
Celeste - Not Your Muse (10)
I think this one is suffering on year end rankings due to the truly bizarre physical release strategy and that it was a January album. This is the closest thing we've had to an original Amy Winehouse release since Amy Winehouse passed. Strong, fantastic vocals with great tracks and musicality and it's a pleasure to listen to.
Claud - Super Monster (10)
Speaking of early year releases, Claud's Super Monster got some early hype from being a Phoebe Bridgers signee and was a Secretly RotM and then kinda died off. It's really, really good bedroom pop. Claud is a contemporary of Clairo and similar minded artists, and while I don't think Claud's lyricism gets to be quite as strong as Clairo, the song structure and musical choices are much more amenable to my ears. It's one of the handful of albums this year I can go back to at any time and enjoy immensely.
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - Georgia Blue (10)
I feel weird putting an all-covers album on the list and totally respect/understand those who don't. For me, the choices of cover songs, featured artists, and artistic choices within the songs elevate this. Honeysuckle Blue is an absolute jam, both Brittany Spencer covers are impeccably done, and there's not exactly many skips on this which is very difficult to justify on a covers album
Sarah Jarosz - Blue Heron Suite (10)
I'm a completely biased SarJar Stan, and yes this is like a five year old piece created for FreshGrass. But it was re-recorded and released this year. I strongly encourage you to give this a listen if you haven't, it's a very different and personal release for her influenced by her mother's (now luckily beaten) cancer diagnosis and Hurricane Harvey hitting her stomping grounds. She does a lot of work on here that's different: more symbolism, leaning into a lot of instrumental work (by Picker and Hamer who are both great), and it's just a real beautiful piece.
Valerie June - The Moon And Stars: Prescription for Dreamers (10)
I feel like Americana/Roots/Blues music field was absolutely dominated by women of color this year. I could have made most of an honest top 10 out of great albums released by Women BIPOC in this field. I know others have brought up the great releases by Allison Russell, Amythyst Kiah, Yola, Adia Victoria, etc, so I'll go for Valerie June. Four years since her prior release, with what seems like a heavier heart, I think it's a bit more musically adventurous but still rife full of great songwriting and creative song choices that make it so easy to go back to over and over again.

You know what an album that is half absolute jams and some less memorable songs on it is? On this list. Yeah, there's some duds here but Driver's License, Good 4 You, Traitor, Brutal, Deja Vu is a group of five songs that any pop singer would probably give up a TON to have over their entire career.
The Weather Station - Ignorance (10)
I keep coming back to it. It's beautiful and the sameness of some of it doesn't really get old. No complaints.
Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders & The London Symphony Orchestra - Promises (10)
I never listen to this kind of music and it had me absolutely transfixed the entire time. There has to be some credit for that on my list.
