I think the most you can give a particular album is 20. I initially made the same mistake.

Maybe it's a matter of genre preference? I wouldn't say it was a particularly memorable year for rock. But in regards to pop, hip-hop, r&b and dance music in general, there was a lot of stuff that both pushed artistic / genre boundaries and that I am confident I'll be listening to for years.

Part of that probably has to do with the ways in which top 40 radio has completely destroyed rock's place at top of the zietgiest. All the people I know who only like rock music are the same people who think modern music sucks-- because the stuff on the radio sucks. Meanwhile, there's a lot of strong indie shit but people find their own path or scene to it so it usually stays a lot more niche than, say, the new Tove Lo or Kendrick.

Not saying that second portion is true of you by the way. We've had enough music related convos for me to know you have diverse taste. And anybody spending regular time on this forum is a music junkie. Just think it's really hard for concensus classics to form in a genre that's become so splintered.

I also thought last year was the weakest year for music in roughly a decade though and a lot of people here felt very differently. So obviously, this shit's the definition of subjective.

It’s just a music preference thing. I only loved one album this year (Alvvays) and bought fewer than 10 new releases. Frankly that’s been my m.o. for the last 5 years or so.

I don’t think contemporary music sucks; I just don’t like most of it and generally feel that “it’s not for me.” Instead I spend 99% of my listening time exploring old music (e.g. this year, I bought 20+ ECM jazz releases from the 70s/80s).

I might as well post my “list”:

Alvvays - Blue Rev (20pts)
Father John Misty - Chloë and The Next 20th Century (15pts)
Nilufer Yanya - Painless (15 pts)
Belle & Sebastian - A Bit of Previous (15 pts)
Wilco - Cruel Country (15 pts)
Spoon - Lucifer on the Sofa (5 pts)
Beach House - Once Twice Melody (5 pts)
Taylor Swift - Midnights (5 pts)
DOMi & JD Beck - NOT TiGHT (3 pts)
The Weeknd - Dawn FM (2 pts)

As I stated above, if I could give the Alvvays album 100 pts, I would. It’s the only 2022 album that I absolutely loved.

Edit: I don't want to rethink my points, but if I'd gotten Larkin Poe - Blood Harmony on wax earlier in the year it would have risen high on my list. I'd streamed it a couple times before I finally ordered it, but that didn't do this rocking album justice. What a fun country rock album!

Black Thought & Danger Mouse - Cheat Codes (20)
Fergus McCreadie - Forest Floor (15)

Binker & Moses - Feeding The Machine (5)
Sampa The Great - As Above, So Below (5)
Muriel Grossmann - Universal Code (5)
Akusmi - Fleeting Future (5)

@Rip_City

Not the easiest list to put together, not least as Little Simz only just came out, and I find it hard to really listen to stuff not on vinyl (applies to Sampa and Muriel too). But those top 5 stood head and shoulders above the rest for me. It's been fun listening to them all this past week to make my mind up.

I should always just give Angel Olsen the benefit of the doubt.

I put off listening to her new album because I can count the # of country albums I like on one finger (Golden Hour)...

This album is incredible. And like Golden Hour, it's barely country.
I found myself listening to this album a lot this year, and noticed that I don't have a standout favorite song. I think it's a very good album that flows beautifully from track to track.

NIce to see EABS getting the love!
