Neverending Covid-19 Coronavirus

Reading something that I have not thought about yet as I don't have kids of my own.

But for the majority of Americans, daycare centers are now closed. If both parents have jobs that don't allow for them to work from home one of the parents has to stay at home. And for many Americans this is a huge issue. They are jeopardizing their employment by not going into work, especially if both parents work in service industry. There are no options for unpaid leave. Sick time must be used and if they don't have enough available sick time it's a writeup. Will retail and food service places that are giants address their policies fast enough to make accommodations? Experts say too many may not or do so too late. Policies for most of these types of businesses require vacation requests to be received with at least 2 to 3 weeks advanced notice and must be approved. It they have may people out already, which I suspect is the case they will not approve these time off requests.

This is even more troublesome for single parents.

More childcare madness.

Just read about someone who is going through this.

I daycare center sent out an email saying many people have been emailing asking about getting a refund or credits while the daycare center is closed sense they already paid for it.

The reply was corporate has instructed them to give no refunds or credits. They are closed because the governor ordered it and they still need to pay their staff.

They expect parents to continue to make payments while they are closed and addressed for them how to do so.

This parent was like what am I supposed to do, continue to give them $2000 a month out of the goodness of my heart?

Reality of it is, if they don't make these payments their slot may not be reserved when the daycare center reopens. In many cities not only is childcare unaffordable, but 40% of parents report they are unable to find childcare because there isn't enough available.

Yeah, my preschool so far is closed for (at least) the next two weeks and will not be giving me any money back. Our tuition includes lunch and snacks, so it seems a least a little crummy. After that they said "we'll see." Not sure what to think. We can't really afford it anyway.

Pennsylvania Gov. Wolf to order statewide shutdown over coronavirus

All non-essential business too close. (Grocery Stores and gas stations to remain open)
There still seems to be some confusion over what this means. If it means all businesses or strictly retail businesses. Especially confusing for people like me who work in an office.

This excludes US citizens. Trudeau isn't really giving a satisfactory answer as to why they're excluding citizens from the country that is currently least able to test.

To be honest, we all know that it's about Trump's volatility. Since everything is going tremendously over there, he's liable to hit us back with economic sanctions or reprisals we can't afford to have at this time.

We won't be able to let non-commercial traffic from the US through for long though.

I'm sure it will eventually happen though. Hopefully not too late.

Greetings from Day 6 of mandatory social distancing in Paraguay. On Tuesday March 10th, Paraguay confirmed its 2nd covid case. By the evening news cycle, the President was on the airwaves announcing school and univeristy closures as well as limiting large gatherings of people. Most government offices would open later and close early. Fútbol matches would be played with no public. Some people freaked. We haven't had an announcement like this since the end of our dictatorship in 1989. Naturally, people flocked to supermakets fearing the worst. (Fortunately supermarkets are still stocked). Day by day you'd see less people on the streets. By the weekend all sports events were called off. Malls and shopping centers announced they'd close until the governement lifts the ban. But as always, there would be some people on street hanging, eating at food carts, drinking in bodegas. So as of today, Monday March 16th, the government martial law like status: people cannot be out from 8PM to 4AM. Police and military will be on the street and people will be fined and jailed. The government is not sticky pudding around this thing. We're a developping country with 700 ICUs total. Most are already in use due to the dengue fever epidemic we're going through. So we're all trying to stay put and not get sick. We have closed our office and will be working from home. I went yesterday to the office building to bring some paperwork only to find an empty downtown. It was eerie. Slowly but surely all non essential businesses will shut down. So we'll just have to cope and wait and see what happens. Every day brings a new thing into the mix, so we're all trying to adapt and handle it the best we can. Hope each and everyone of you stays safe and healthy, wash your hands and try to avoid leaving the house.

That's very true. Add that to the list of other reasons why Canada's relationship with the U.S. can really be more of a curse than a blessing sometimes.

Not just Virgin I guess. My sister in law is a flight attendant and signed something saying she'd keep her job if she didn't work (or get paid) for April. Not sure what would have happened if she didn't sign.

Edit: meant to say with Delta.

I can't believe Trump just rated his response to the Coronavirus situation a 10/10 during the live briefing... I mean, of course that's exactly what he'd say, but I still can't believe it. why is he still trying to convince people that he reacted to it early?

And more in the category of billionaires are scum:

Whole Foods is effectively owned by the richest man in the world, but they want employees to "donate" their vacation time to sick workers. Gayle Benson ($3 billion) owns the Pelicans, but it's a 19 year old rookie paying a months salary for the arena's workers. This is a problem.
— Clint Smith (@ClintSmithIII) March 13, 2020

Some of these guys really want to know what a guillotine feels like, huh.

Anybody got people on their Facebook wall pushing the virus as biblical in nature? Between this and climate change the religious zealots sure love rooting for the apocalypse. Of course, this isn't likely to shut them up....

Nothing on social media but I don't follow a lot of people like that, but I heard a local radio host doing the "this is God leaving us to our own devices, this is what happens when we take him out of our culture..." and immediately my mind goes to... I think it was The Stand? And Jonestown. Whatever the case I couldn't help but think that this person probably voted for people who wrecked our epidemic response.

I know it's not even like I leave the house much anyway, but with the surprising readiness of everyone working from home and as many restraunts as possible moving towards delivery-only it's starting to feel like even when we get this COVID-19 nonsense under control no-one is going to leave the house to Do Things ever again. Maybe I'd be more at ease if we were in a country that had the resources to test people at the ready so either we don't have to lockdown as hard because we can actually keep track of the thing OR I at least would have some perspective on why we're locking down as hard as we are. By this point I'm wanting to go out and cough on everyone I see even without having COVID-19.
