It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

He is for me but then equally Paul Scholes is probably only an Eric Cantona away from being my all time favourite footballer so that really is the kind of midfielder I admire 😂
It's funny, I always had a love/hate relationship with Cantina. I loved the fact he went into the crowd but hated the fact he went into the crowd! A complicated man with exceptional talent. Scholes? As great as he was, I thought he could have been more..

Well yeah given I support united Eric is the apex for my generation because I came in at the tail end of Robson and him Robbo and Georgie Best are the 3 most iconic figures in the clubs history.

I couldn’t disagree with you more on Scholes. He was absolutely perfect. Part of what I was getting at earlier is that I’d take a Scholes over a Gerard or a Lampard any day of the week because whilst they might appear easier on the eye, get more goals and grab headlines, players like Scholes win you titles because they know how to control a game and set the tempo week in week out. Also 150 goals from midfield isn’t shabby!

I get what you're saying and I don't disagree. Ferguson always said he was the best finisher at the club but I never viewed him as a goalscorer. If you transplant him into today's game (or 5 years ago) then his rep would be much higher amongst non Man. Utd fans.

He was in his younger days which I think a lot of people forget. I think the post England retirement playmaker is more what people remember. I never viewed him as a finisher as such, the things I’d always hear out of the club was that he was the best striker of a ball (apparently his trick in training was the ability to hit someone smack on the arse from 60 yards away when they’d sneak away for a piss in the hedges). I’d actually always heard that Ole was the best technical finisher anyone at the club had seen. The one thing I’ll say about Scholes is he’s the only English midfielder of his generation who could have played comfortably in a Pep team.

Yeah it’s such an insane amount of money that’s been reported that it’d be very very hard to turn down. It’s supposedly only a short term contract too, he’s only 23 and can go to Madrid in a year or two and still have a long career there.

Will Madrid want him after this while drawn out shenanigans though? They should because he’ll still be the best player in the world in 2 years but I can see them not wanting him then

Nah Madrid isn’t quite like that. That’s more the kind of thing an old fashioned manager driven club might do. You could see Fergie, for example, happily snub someone who messed him about in favour of keeping the group tight. Madrid on the other hand are much more about glitz and glamour and the show and so if a real star is there for the taking they’ll go for him. In some ways it might be better for them in the short term from a footballing perspective given Benzema’s Indian summer. Also even if Madrid isn’t an option it’s not like he couldn’t go to Barcelona or England, still take the step up and earn millions more.

I don’t think anyone else is capable of having the size of personality Eric had! And to be fair that’s what made him great, he came into a very good team which was just falling short and gave them the belief to become serial winners.
So just for you
