Gardening

I love this conversation @Tortured Diaper Baby Dept and @folsom_lives . I got 6 cubic yards of pure compost delivered a couple weeks ago, since I have a pile (maybe 3 cubic yards) of my own soil to mix it with, after digging for a gravel path I put in last summer. Also, I'm gonna be doing some serious Hügelkultur mounds, and giving them a nice top off of compost. I can't wait to get started.

Also, I chatted with the guy who runs the compost busines about the"overbuying," and having some laying around beyond this summer. He said to definitely make sure you turn over whatever compost you have remaining a couple times, maybe once before freeze, and another time post winter, just to keep it living nicely.

A sample of what the garden could hold this year. Plus the tomatoes and peppers as usual. Really excited to see how the pickling cucumbers do. This might be my gateway into canning.

Forgot I used all the chive seeds… so I’ll have some of those too maybe.
We got some pickling cucumbers as well. I have canned pickles but it was a while ago. I think I want to go strawberry and blueberry (and maybe blackberry) picking and can some pie filling and jam.

I'm really just hoping now that the two fake rubber snakes I put up keep the squirrels at bay. They have been going to town diggin all sorts of holes to nowhere in the bed with the seeds I just planted...

I didn't have this problem last year. So I'm wondering if a few of them got wise to my hiding spot. The thing is, we've had a coyote roaming around too and I was hoping he would have thinned the herd by now.

Anybody have success with sprays or other means of repelling digging pests?
