Canadaland shipping shenanigans (and other conversations too, eh?)

Have to say I am getting a bit worried about how this tariff talk will affect buying and shipping of records from the US, both stuff bought directly from artists and items shipped to retailers in Canada from the US.

Oh well, it will help me keep my vinyl diet going.

I picked up my Kendrick preorder, other than that I'm pretty much tapped out. Haven't bought anything else in months.

just a heads up: been ordering from Juno since 2018, places dozens of orders, and got hit with duties for the first time last week. granted, the amount was higher than usual (about 60 pounds), but I got another 60+ pounds shipment from them as recently as a couple of months ago, and it was fine then

Yeah I was doing the same from Ella in Japan but started getting nailed there as well... But yeah generally if you're getting up into the $100 CAD range you're likely gunna get hit...

I got hit with duties last time I ordered from Juno too. Around December or January. I think there were 3 records in there, so it tracks with that $100 range. I've been hit from Ella Japan pretty much every one of the last few orders I made there. Though I think it's been a year since the last one.

To be fair I think most of my fees from Ella are due to them using DHL. In the past when I asked them to declare each record as like 5 dollars it worked to avoid DHL fees... this stopped working about 2 years ago though, and since then no matter what I get dinged.

So is vinyl in the initial rounds of tariffs? That said they might just charge the normal taxes more often from US shipments? Anybody have recent experience? I personally got dinged taxes by Canada Post on a PIF I received, of all things. I guess it was valued a little high for their liking, but not that high (I think it was marked at around $60 IIRC). I would never get hit on something like that before. That was in early Feb.

I usually get dinged on anything over $60 coming from the states. That's why I always ask anyone PIFing to put a value of like $10. Also that's likely $60 usd which is like $85 CAD now...

I pretty much never got charged duties from the US except when a courier like FedEx or DHL is used. This one was surprising, but I figure it's just the breaks. I never noticed, but probably most stores probably know to lowball the value. It just feels like a crap shoot (though overall, I got dinged seldomly so no complaints).
