ABBA- Arrival

ABBA Gold is one of the few albums I consider to be 10/10. If that’s the only ABBA album you listen to I totally get it. But I’m a huge defender that ABBA has several fantastic albums that are more than worth it to check out and this is absolutely one of them. The singles are obvious highlights and “Dancing Queen” specifically is one of my favorite songs of all time, but just focusing on the singles/Gold songs you miss out of songs like “My Love, My Life” which is one of their most beautiful songs and “Why’d it Have to Be Me” which is a bop.

I prefer both Voulez Vous and Super Trouper to this album but if this is their only rep in the book it is a great representation of who they are and I hope it gets people to check out their deep cuts

I wish I was at a point in the exploration of Power Pop to move on from Big Star, but I’m not. I was oblivious to them until about 15 years ago or so. A customer at the comic shops gave me this:

It’s a comp of the first two albums. It’s beat to hell and the marantz was like what the fuck ever when I tried to play it which is why I then bought those records from my local. I love these records but have never given them the time they deserve and no other power pop I’ve heard speaks to
Me in the same way. These guys are like the glam non country leaning version of Wilco and I dig it. One day I suppose I’ll move on and ask for suggestions, but for now… digging this record again!

Clearly I should read up on these cats, I knew about Chilton singing The Letter but I had no idea about them naming themselves after a super market. lol. More Wilco through lines. Also no clue they were from Memphis. I always figured they were midwestern. And Ardent is Stax? Well that may have been the most informative entry on the book for me.

Big Star - #1 Record

This is one of those albums where I'm aware of the band, aware of the album, definitely seen the album cover before but I can't say I actually know anything by them.

Obviously I recognize the That 70's Show Theme. I also recognize "Thirteen" but not sure if it's from a cover or what.

The Replacements recorded Please To Meet Me (and the song “Alex Chilton”) in Memphis primarily due to Paul Westerberg’s love of the band.

I respect Big Star and enjoy their music. I would still rather listen to many of the bands they influenced than to Big Star themselves.

Original flavour please. The 90s produced WAY too many Big Star wannabes.
Who would be an example of bands that were trying to sound like Big Star. I didn't get any sense of one album of any obvious "oh yeah, this sounds a lot like...."
