The Official Needles and Grooves 1001 Album Generator Project (aka Preachin’ about the Preachers if today’s selection sucks)

There was one nugget in the book about this record.

If you don’t know, they started recording the record with Mutt Lange and he quit. They brought in Jim Steinman. Evidently this was a real bad mix. They recorded the album in Ireland. At one point Steinman was talking to Joe Elliott and said it was cool to be in the land of Joyce and Yeats. Elliott said that was cool but they hadn’t met any local musicians.

Lol

I'm amazed and how many bland, arena rock songs there are that I didn't realize were Def Leppard. This album is like the Joshua Tree of boring 80's hair metal.

Arrested Development - 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life of…

This (and Boys II Men’s Cooleyhighharmony) was the first CD I ever purchased when I got my first CD player, a Craig Boombox, for Christmas in 1992.

Pavement - Crooked Drain Crooked Rain

One of my favorite all-time albums. All of their albums are fantastic but this is the Pavement albums with “the hits” most of the die-hard Pavement fans would choose Wowee Zowee as their favorite as that album was a bit reactionary to the popularity that they won with this album.

Pavement’s Slanted & Enchanted came out in 1992 and was a touchstone for a certain type of indie rock and that influence led to Weezer’s Blue album in 1994 and the Blue Albums popularity plowed a path forward for Crooked Rain, which was also released in 1994; to be successful. In a lot of ways Weezer were the more mainstream major label version of Pavement. “Cut Your Hair” was a top 10 song on the Billboard Modern Rock chart in 1994 but even that modest mainstream success scared the shit out of the band so Malkmus retreated back to the land of 120 minutes to follow his muse and concoct Wowee Zowee an album that cut out the hooks and cranked up the weird.

I am ultimately a pop guy though so Crooked Rain will always be my favorite.

This album has never been one of my favorite hip hop albums but I do admire that it sounds a little different than most stuff coming out at the time. "Tennessee" is probably one of my favorite 90's songs though.
