The Official Needles and Grooves 1001 Album Generator Project (aka Preachin’ about the Preachers if today’s selection sucks)

I did not realize this was one of the first albums to not have a corresponding mono release. It’s also fascinating to me that Page was a pioneer in ambient recording as I always thought this album has a very psychedelic sound (more so than any of their other albums) and figured the recording techniques would have been more common in 66/67.

I'm actually not sure if I've ever listened to Tommy before. It was good. Not as good as Quadrophenia but still a 4/5 for me.

Aqualung is one of those albums that no matter how many times I listen to it, it just never clicks with me.

I don't know this MJ Cole album at all. Am I ever going to get a track where it's like "oh ok, I know this one"?

Doubtful.

Also, I never really had a problem with the Grudge tag being applied to this one. Mother Love Bone was very much a hair metal band. Pearl Jam, at least the production on Ten, muddied up that whole sound and then Vedder’s vocals added another layer of grime to the whole thing. This was something new. Alice In Chains did similar things. Soundgarden was too far heavy and then proggy metal… Nirvana is just a punk band pure and simple.

Evenflow, Would?, Drawing Flies…. Thank god for CDs because those were instant repeat songs for me pretty much every time.
I had the cassette tape in elementary school. I was really into “Jeremy” in 4th grade. I remember listening to the cassette and memorizing the lyrics from the J-Card. I don’t think I ever own the CD. I owned a lot of PJ CDs throughout the 90s but I don’t think I ever purchased that one on CD.

This (the version I have on vinyl) is not the most pleasant headphone listen. The treble is a little harsh and the pressing is just full of all kinds of surface noise, non fill, whooshes, fucking crackle. Who pressed this shit? (Aaahh… United, makes sense… https://www.discogs.com/release/20210017-Pearl-Jam-Ten what dumb ass paid $100 bucks for this travesty?)

I’ve also never really noticed all the hard panning before. Plus it’s just not as pleasant as it is over the speakers. Some of it is for sure the mix, because the drums are nice and crisp.

I might see if I can dig my cd out and see if United just completely murdered it.

Cogs reviews talk about it being thin and compressed. I don’t know, it’s pretty dynamic. It’s just a fucking mess like the levels were all wrong. It feels like it’s missing some of the bottom end too. Maybe that lack of warmth is what the reviewers are talking about. Possible they just couldn’t decipher what was going on behind the clicks and clacks and pops and other fucking nonsense going on with the vinyl.

I have a limited edition yellow digipak that added three extra tracks - Dirty Frank, Wash, and a live version of Alive.

I love this album, and all the similar stuff that came out at this time. As per above, I liked that all the bands were slightly different.

Definitely lost interest in them, as the last few albums haven’t been amazing, but seeing them live last month was a huge highlight.
