If you read the write up for album 100 he kinda explains why he left off some canonical album specifically name in Illinois and Funeral.
It’s a Steve Hyden list. He is the music reviewer who literally wrote a book about Kid A. I believe you were one of the folks that really dislike his writing style. Anyways, he makes personal lists like this all the time basically as an excuse to write about albums. I would have included lots of bands on my list tf I were writing this (including ATDI, Sufjan, and Arcade Fire) but I can certainly appreciate a music critic’s (whose been writing about indie rock for 25 years) choice to Not write about those albums again for the umpteenth time especially if he’s not super into those bands regardless of their importance.Yes, he’s talking out of his arse making meaningless distingushments that make little meaningful sense.

LOL! Did you see Steve kicked a puppy or something?Yeah he’s an arse
Great list. I own 63 out of the 100. You are probably closer to 80?
He's an everyman writer. He writes what he feels, not necessarily what aligns with public opinion or sourcing info for a list like this to make it inclusive. Also isn't afraid of blowback by saying things like "I don't get Sufjan" or "The Killers are overrated"I enjoy how he writes. It's not really clean writing per se, but I like how his sporadic thoughts just get thrown in between everything. It also helps that his music taste lines up well with mine though.
I think it's the huge lists like this that try to take in a whole time period or have a largely worthless descriptor like indie that piss me off, and I think you're right that they are more there to massage our egos or are rage bait. But I usually love lists that are focused on subgenres for discovery. He's an everyman writer. Regardless, all music lists are vapid and exist just to massage our egos.
Ooh, I should do that one too. Even better would be a full elephant six ranking. I may need to pick up an old project I'd started on them years ago if I can find which laptop it was on.Pulling off that list, I might do an Of Montreal ranking at some point which will be quite the undertaking.
Me too. I have 3 of his books. He writes like me and my friends talk. I am also a 43 year old man that was born and raised in the Midwest which might be why I find it so relatable. I don’t always agree with his takes but I agree more than I don’t and with music criticism enjoying the prose is more important than whether we agree on everything.I enjoy how he writes. I’m shocked I own 19 of this incredibly over American list. Kid A anyone?
Also, Relationship of Command not being on a list like this is an absolute musical war crime.
I’d look at your list if you made one.
Just leave out the writing stuff.
If I ever get time it’s something I’d love to do. Time feels like it’s something I don’t have a lot of these days though!
You could have done it the other day instead of getting DRUNK!!!
Or you could have done it while you were drunk.
This!Or you could have done it while you were drunk.
You’ll be drunk again soon enough. Just set a reminder on your phone.I like had 3 glasses of whiskey in the 3 hour decompression from work before I sleep time. It was the only day I had that this week because I ended up working late the other nights and I’m travelling this weekend! It was also before this conversation, if only I could predict the future!
