Rank The Albums!

Yes, he’s talking out of his arse making meaningless distingushments that make little meaningful sense.
It’s a Steve Hyden list. He is the music reviewer who literally wrote a book about Kid A. I believe you were one of the folks that really dislike his writing style. Anyways, he makes personal lists like this all the time basically as an excuse to write about albums. I would have included lots of bands on my list tf I were writing this (including ATDI, Sufjan, and Arcade Fire) but I can certainly appreciate a music critic’s (whose been writing about indie rock for 25 years) choice to Not write about those albums again for the umpteenth time especially if he’s not super into those bands regardless of their importance.

Yeah he’s an arse, had I seen his name on the byline I’d have skipped. If he’d called it anything else I’d probably not cared what he put in it but his mental gymnastics are comical. Say what you will about the killers but they’re way more indie than the privately educated in Switzerland trust fund rockers.

Great list. I own 63 out of the 100. You are probably closer to 80?

Interesting list. I'm not an indie-head per se, but I have 14 of those and my daughter has a copy of A.M. (she's an Arctic Monkeys fan somehow). I have 4 of the 5 Canadian albums mentioned (Wolf Parade, New Pornographers and Destroyer, also Mac Demarco on CD - no Andy Shauf). Are there others? Plus there are another 6-7 that I've previously owned on CD or sold my vinyl copy.

I'm between you and @TenderLovingKiller® on this one @Joe Mac. Even having owned a majority of these, the thought of it being a "best of" list always pisses me off and I don't really care for his writing style either. But I do like looking at people's lists like this, because I can judge their poor taste and think that I'd do much better at their job than they do. Then I go back to doing my job that half the US thinks they can do better than me.

I think we'd all write better lists than him if we had the time and got paid for it tho....

I enjoy how he writes. It's not really clean writing per se, but I like how his sporadic thoughts just get thrown in between everything. It also helps that his music taste lines up well with mine though.
He's an everyman writer. He writes what he feels, not necessarily what aligns with public opinion or sourcing info for a list like this to make it inclusive. Also isn't afraid of blowback by saying things like "I don't get Sufjan" or "The Killers are overrated"

Regardless, all music lists are vapid and exist just to massage our egos.

I think it's the huge lists like this that try to take in a whole time period or have a largely worthless descriptor like indie that piss me off, and I think you're right that they are more there to massage our egos or are rage bait. But I usually love lists that are focused on subgenres for discovery.

Me too. I have 3 of his books. He writes like me and my friends talk. I am also a 43 year old man that was born and raised in the Midwest which might be why I find it so relatable. I don’t always agree with his takes but I agree more than I don’t and with music criticism enjoying the prose is more important than whether we agree on everything.

You could have done it the other day instead of getting DRUNK!!!

Or you could have done it while you were drunk.

I like had 3 glasses of whiskey in the 3 hour decompression from work before I sleep time. It was the only day I had that this week because I ended up working late the other nights and I’m travelling this weekend! It was also before this conversation, if only I could predict the future!

You’ll be drunk again soon enough. Just set a reminder on your phone.
