4th Annual N&G 31 Days* of Halloween (2022)

#33.

Halloween Ends (2022) πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

I know this one will be hated with a passion, but I didn't mind what they did with this one.

They forgot the slashing part of being a slasher, though.

Getting sick got in the way of my going to see this last night (or any night soon!) :(
And no Peacock thanks to that invisible line. I may have to pull out the old laptop and engage in some nefarious behaviour to watch. I was really looking forward to the big screen for this one, though.

My daily prompt is Supermarket Horror, so I dredged up Bait from 2012, which I'm jokingly calling "Deep Blue Seafood Aisle."

A tsunami traps a group of people in a flooded, low-level grocery store with sharks. Not much else to say about it. It's fine.

I watched The Mist again a couple months ago and it's one of the better grocery store horrors I can think of, just really grim but too 90s feeling. I always enjoy the setting because it's such a strange quasi-genre to emerge in horror films, haha.

The Mist is great! Also enjoyed Intruder and Fear Street Part One: 1994 which easily qualify.

Could probably argue malls/department stores count. Chopping Mall, Dawn of the Dead.

Man, I have almost watched this one countless times over the last decade but for some reason just finally watched it last night. What an incredibly well done movie from the cinematography and sound design aspects especially though! It kind of gave me Argento Suspiria vibes which is a pretty massive compliment since Suspiria is hands down my favorite film score of all time. It had a Meta approach where i'd say Scream is to slashers as this film is to Giallo's. Since I have just barely gotten my feet wet in the massive Giallo genre especially with all the additional sub genres I probably missed a ton of references i'm guessing as someone that hasn't watched many slashers would after seeing Scream. I'd be interested if anyone that has seen a good amount and also seen this film has any opinion on it?

This is a really tough one to grade or even really recommend as I have no doubt many will love it and many will also likely dislike it due to it not really wrapping anything up or fully explaining much while being a slow burn. I need to let it sink in a bit more and i'll absolutely be giving it another watch down the road a bit once I get a decent amount more Giallo's watched. The sound design is just fucking top notch on this one though and that alone is worth the price of admission on top of great performances. There's a scene where the power goes out so the Sound Engineer entertains the rest of the crew by making a UFO sound effect that was cool as hell. This is a movie where every sound needs to be heard and paid attention to as the visuals could be very misleading.

This is a film where my score will very likely alter up or down a bit after another watch.
I watched this one a long while back because Broadcast did the soundtrack. I do agree it has great sound design and lots of the recording process is really interesting. I don't remember much about it but remember the ending being somewhat abstract . I might need to watch again

Catching up!

8. Alien (1979)
πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

See @gaporter ’s post πŸ˜€

9. Aliens (1986)
πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ¦΄

A worthy sequel, although some of it gets brought down by the now pretty cringeworthy β€œmacho military” storyline (which was super popular at the time - I guess the memories of Vietnam had started to wear off). Some really great stuff though - Ripley’s development into a confident badass (the two-film character development arc is impressive to watch back to back), having Newt in the mix to really establish the stakes for Ripley, and the legitimately unsettling alien mother/egg laying scene.

10. He Never Died (2015)
πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ¦΄

One of my favorites of the last decade - another horror comedy. This is a must watch for fans of Henry Rollins. He manages to be hilarious, super awkward, and likeable as a vampire-like anti-hero. Somehow his inability to navigate mundane human life seems relatable. The plot and the horror elements are nothing special - the characters carry this one. I don’t think anyone would say this is as good of a movie as Aliens, but I think I like it just as much.

Literally next on my Strickland list.

This one was a real surprise! And even more surprising, the sequel She Never Died was even better. True under-the-radar gems.

I didn't know this existed. Thank you!

Yeah, it def. has an abstract ending and really much of the nuances throughout are even a bit abstract. I'm not the biggest fan of endings that are somewhat open to interpretation as I feel it's usually a cop out or just lazy but it worked for this one I thought. It's absolutely a movie that demands your full attention if you want to get the most out of it, that's for sure. I say it's a rock solid 3 1/2 just for the soundtrack/sound design alone but depending on the person I could see anyone not liking it much or loving it. I honestly don't know how I will feel after a second viewing but there's a lot more subtle details I will be looking for next time around.

So happy Shout fixed the issues with the original Studio Canal 4k release which was a major disappointment. This release is flawless imo as the original Mono sounded best so that ended up being a huge addition to this release as well. This movie plays musical chairs with Halloween and The Thing as Carpenter's best film for me depending how I am feeling on a certain day. I love atmospheric Horror and this one stands up against anything in that regard especially. Not much else to say about this Classic as it still holds up as good as it ever has for me.

The Collingswood Story (2002)

I had tried to find this years ago but never could and the other night I just randomly stumbled across a copy of it. It honestly wasn't anything too special but I would have probably enjoyed it much more 10+ years ago as it is def. dated now. A huge problem right off the top is that the two main characters have zero chemistry and do not feel like a real couple at all. It's just a mediocre Found Footage film though so if you're not a fan of the sub genre at all I doubt you'll get any enjoyment out of it. It had a couple creepy moments and a decent premise but the execution was rough throughout. It came out originally in 2002 so in the beginning when the girl wants to move the camera to a different room you see a 50-100 foot ethernet cord winding around the door haha.

Don't know why I put this one off for so long, but goddamn, Don't Breathe is intense.

Not only is the suspense unrelenting, this movie is me-ti-cu-lous. Impeccable cinematography and storytelling.

I watched this on a plane once. It was a lot of uncomfortable is someone watching me watching this at the end lol.

Day 44.

πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

I hadn't watched this since it came out, but don't remember liking it as much as I did this time. Very much agree with @EvanBenner, it's perfectly paced suspense that keeps you glued to the screen.

Watching the second one now, because why not!

Just finished Don't Breathe 2.

πŸ’€πŸ’€

It's a drop off with some weakness
like how it seems to switch from military to meth heads without much explanation of how these meth heads have exmilitary / mercenaries working for them, and it goes a bit too hard on the shock level violence rather than the suspense to drive it. The first one made a story of twisted sense that you could almost buy into being plausible, this one did not. Everyone is sick, the little girl is a victim, and the quasi-redemption of the series' villain through a traumatized little girl leaned toward gross.
But if it succeeded at all, then it did so similarly to the first in creating a character that I was intrigued by, and that's part of what's so disturbing about the films, because he is an awful person deserving of the worst that happens to him.

I'm debating that one. I know Alvarez has a writing credit, but it sounds like they went in a... problematic direction. Wonder if whoever took over directing duties can live up to the quality of Alvarez's visuals, though.

The Loved Ones (2009)

I've always been surprised that this movie hardly gets any respect when talking about the better Horror movies of the 2000's. It's easily one of my favorites from the past 10-15 years. It's just batshit crazy and never lets up once it gets started with actual twists and turns that surprise you along the way. I suggest not watching more then 40 or so seconds of the trailer to see if you're interested as they ruin a lot of the fun if you go much beyond that before watching. The one negative is one of the side character stories they go to for a few minutes here and there just leaves you wanting to get back to the main story but I get why it's there. This is still becoming a legitimate classic for me though as I have seen it probably a hand full of times and still absolutely love it. The soundtrack is awesomely done as well and there's a track that will be stuck in your head for days afterwards. Highly recommend this one if you haven't seen it!

See what I just wrote above. It did very much go in a problematic direction that was gross. I don't know why the writers went the direction they did when they easily could have not.
