4th Annual N&G 31 Days* of Halloween (2022)

Day 15.

The Town That Dreaded Sundown
๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿฆด

An ok slasher that might have been better had I read up on it first and watched the one from the 70s before this one.

I actually liked the "requel" better!

Child's Play (1988) ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€

I haven't watched any of these movies since part 3 was first on cable, so it's been a while.

Chucky just wasn't all that interesting to me to watch any of the movies past the original trilogy...so this will be the first time viewing those.

I love the whole series. Some of them are objectively terrible, but it adds to the humor for me. And the new show that picks up from the last film is really good!

With exactly one month till the new Hellraiser, I'm determined to make it through the final two franchise entries I haven't seen.

While I hesitated to feed this thread a downright negative entry, Hellraiser is a super iconic spooky IPโ€”one that's well-known for the quality taking a significant plunge the longer the Cenobites' disparate saga goes on.

And since suffering is kind of the point, here I am with Hellraiser: Revelations. Number nine of ten, and the first without Doug Bradley as "Pinhead."

Surprising no one, this eleventh-hour excuse to keep the studio's rights ownership alive comes off more like a fan-made film than anything. And yet, I think I still found it more tolerable than #7, Hellraiser: Deader.

As with most Hellraiser entries, this title also features far too little of the series's signature extra-dimensional beings.

Of the many sights the Cenobites have to show you, this is one of the least effectual.

๐Ÿ’€, but only because Deader already fills the half-skull spot.

I think you might enjoy this Hellraiser

Decided to watch a classic. I've actually never seen this before but I can see why people like it. Its so gritty/dirty - you can't help but feel grossed out a bit. And the characters in here are just so sadistic. Sally's a badass! She has lung for days - not sure how she kept her voice through the whole thing. Also, she not only only jumped out of a window, but she jumped out of 2 windows - one from the second floor and still manage to limp away. She's a survivor for sure, and a good example of how your survive a horror movie.

I'm almost certain I've posted it before but I could not find it just now, and so I'm posting it again: The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle talking with Walter Chaw about Texas Chainsaw Massacre -- if you're a fan of the movie, it's an interesting discussion between them. I don't know Walter or his work, but it really comes off as a conversation between two nerdy fans of the movie, in the best way possible.

7. The Innocents (2021)
Rating: ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€
I really liked this one. It reminds me of the movie Chronicle a little bit in that one of the characters in both movies completely creeps me out. Something about those characters being young and not fully developing a moral compass but developing a god complex that makes them terrifying.

I've been saving this one for when I need a good movie. Heard lots of great things.

Somehow I messed around and upped the fucked upness a notch or two on each of the last 3 movies I watched.. This was like watching The Strangers with some very strong social commentary and there is one line especially in each of these movies that really connected them. The camera work and cinematography is absolutely stellar along with top notch performances across the board and leaves you pondering some very important, deep rooted questions about the state of not only yourself but everyone Worldwide going forward. I said in my last review I likely wouldn't watch the movie Henry again but this is one I will 100% not need to see again personally as it fucked me up a bit last night with it still lingering today. This is another tough one where I can't say most of what I want without clear spoilers so i'll just leave this saying to go in knowing you're going to watch a hard hitting movie with some real darkness. I am glad I watched it as there is no question it is an extremely well made film all around but the Director clearly wanted to make the audience feel very uncomfortable which he absolutely excelled at.

It's a near must watch for any Horror fan but I doubt you'll be recommending it to many people afterwards.

MOVIE #12
Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995)
Screenshot_20220918-005934_Letterboxd.jpg
Ended up having to go with the theatrical cut as it's the version I had available.

Certainly not the Halloween franchise's finest moment. I'll take people's word for it that the "Producer's Cut" is better, but what I just watched was pretty terrible. The story and script are ridiculous, especially as a conclusion to an arc they spread out over three different movies. The extreme in-your-face editing felt a bit obnoxious and out of place too. At this point, it feels like they've just overcomplicated things and are trying too hard to keep the formula going, while forgetting so many of the elements that made the series enjoyable to begin with. I did enjoy the part where Michael makes a guy's head explode, though.

8. It Comes at Night (2017)
Rating: ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿฆด
I'm kind of surprised this movie was released in 2017. If I never looked it up, I would have assumed it was inspired by the last 2 years. I went into it blind without reading anything about the plot. The only thing I knew about it was from when I watched something about aspect ratios in movies and it sounded interesting so I added it to my watchlist. I thought it was well done - I was on edge the whole time. And like some of my favorite horrors, the true horror is the sadness. I respect that you never see the outsider that spread the sickness. You don't even technically know if it was the kid who gave it to Travis or vice versa that set off this whole ending (although I get the vibe that Travis probably contracted it on one of his dreamwalks). It forces the threat/blame to come from within the household which makes it so much more impactful.

MOVIE #13
Dead Silence (2007)
Screenshot_20220918-221501_Letterboxd.jpg
Possibly an unpopular opinion, considering this seems to have pretty low ratings across the board, but this is a very underrated film from James Wan. I really don't get the hate, it's a thrilling, entertaining macabre ghost story that feels like a big-budget B-movie. Some moments almost reminded me of Malignant, another Wan project I thought was underappreciated. I think in the case of both films, if you go in wanting to critique it, you'll find problems, but if you're willing to go along with the premise, you'll have a lot of fun.

Rumpelstiltskin (1995)

I had a blast with this one ๐Ÿ˜‚.. It's like the red-headed stepchild of the Leprechaun movies. It's low budget, the cast knows the plot is messy asf along with the script itself so they just all ham it up along with a pretty awesome villian in Rumpelstiltskin who is constantly shit talking everyone with a poor olde english accent that works so well all things considered. Like one time he's in a bit of trouble and calmly says "Fucketh Me" or when one of the good guys is chasing him and calling him Rumpelshitskin in a serious tone, it just works. I hadn't seen this since I rented it on VHS probably 25 or so years ago as a little guy but I remember loving it then and it's still fun as hell. If you like the Leprechaun movies I don't see how you wouldn't like this as well, one of the still lost gems imo.. Really surprised no boutique labels have done a release of this yet considering some of the trash that has come out.

Entertainment value is probably a 4 easily but i'd say a 3 1/2 is fitting for an overall score!

A super random fact that caught me by surprise as well is that this film was produced by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, the original creators of Scooby-Doo for Hanna Barbera.

Day 17.

Keep forgetting to update, but watched this a couple nights ago. It was not as good as the first at all and in some ways ruined the first. By shifting the story in a direction that allowed for a sequel it made the twist of the first less significant. Plus Lauren Cohen now is >>> Katie Holmes now. Prime vs. prime would maybe be a different story, but I think Lauren is a better actress overall.

Day 18.

The Long Night
Rating: ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€

I want to like this one more than I did, but the plot could not overcome it's many problems. I'm really happy there have been a couple movies posted that I haven't seen yet, so tonight will be easier to pick one!

Back after my festival weekend, and ready to go full bore on movies from now thru Halloween.

Kicking things back off with my first HoopTober 9 entryโ€”another ultimate film in a series I've long been planning to finish.

Mother of Tears (2007) closes out Dario Argento's Three Mothers trilogy 30 years after cult-classic Suspiria (1977) and Inferno (1980).

While the first two were visually surreal and carried strong airs of mystery, this movie feels very much the mean and blunt product of its own time, but with bad acting, writing, and editing choices to boot.

Not recommended, even for completists.

Trucks (1997) is the second attempt at adapting the Stephen King short story of the same name to filmโ€”the first being Maximum Overdrive directed by King himself in 1986.

Allegedly, this made-for-TV movie is truer to the source, which currently sits unread on my bookshelf. Even without having read the story, the weight of padding in this movie is readily apparent.

It's also far too self-serious. Like, with a premise as ridiculous as trucks (and other stuff) come to life and kill people you'd probably expect some camp sensibility, but no. It's also just not scary. Still, I'm curious to see how King's own celluloid take compares.

At the very least, this movie looks pretty dang good. It's shot rather competently for how ultimately boring it is.
