4th Annual N&G 31 Days* of Halloween (2022)

Well, i'll keep the lackluster Stephen King adaptation train going with this 4 1/2 hour waste of time....

Storm of the Century (TV Mini Series 1999)

I vaguely remember watching pieces of this when I was younger and being bored but just recently it became available in HD for the first time so I thought it was a perfect opportunity to finally watch the entire thing especially considering the glowing reviews I seen with some people even calling it a "Classic" or one of the best Stephen King adaptations period. I couldn't disagree enough, I tried so hard to sit through this and hope it would get better until finally it ended and I just shook my head in confusion how so many people say they love it?.. It felt like an EXTREMELY drawn out Lifetime movie with a dash of Horror sprinkled in. It's too bad because I love the idea of horrible weather themed Horror movies and the general idea of the plot could have been at least decent if handled right. It was JUST good enough to leave me with a bit of hope after each of the first two parts that it could get better but nope.

MOVIE #14
Insidious (2010)

Decided to put on another James Wan movie. In hindsight, you can probably trace the Conjuring boom of the 2010s back to the success of this movie. It's a solid haunted house movie, with a lot of creepy, creative visuals and genuinely unsettling scenes. A lot of people like to rip on PG-13 horror movies, and while a great deal of them are bad, some can use the rating to their advantage, relying more on atmosphere and dread than gore and violence to scare the audience.

The Invitation (2022)

Such a horrible movie... Just really, really bad with no redeeming qualities imo.. They even half assed some callbacks to the original Dracula novel but half assing it was a theme that clearly ran through all aspects of this movie so not too surprised. I will say the main girl seems like she has potential with a better script/role but she was still nowhere near good enough to make this movie any good. At least this made Storm Of The Century seem a bit better.

You know it's bad when the toughest Vampire fight by far is against the....... Butler.. All the other extremely experienced vampires were no test for a helpless girl that became a vampire just minutes before.

Fulfilled my Tobe Hooper requirement for this year's HoopTober with Crocodile (2000).

Stupid spring breakers become fodder for an angry momma croc with painfully 90s sensibilities and a commitment to dumb creature feature fun. A very different experience than Hooper's other killer croc film, Eaten Alive.

I found this one to be more palatable than the painstaking Lake Placid, but not as satisfying as Alligator.

Day 19.

Dead Silence
Rating: 💀💀💀

I didn't love this as much as @gaporter, but it was a plenty fun watch. I'll agree that it is better than the reviews would make it out to be, especially with the ending. Although Jason Stackhouse was pretty wooden for playing a real boy. I might need to move on from the creepy doll genre for my next couple though.

Possibly an unpopular opinion, considering this seems to have pretty low ratings across the board, but this is a very underrated film from James Wan. I really don't get the hate, it's a thrilling, entertaining macabre ghost story that feels like a big-budget B-movie. Some moments almost reminded me of Malignant, another Wan project I thought was underappreciated. I think in the case of both films, if you go in wanting to critique it, you'll find problems, but if you're willing to go along with the premise, you'll have a lot of fun.

I may have to make time for a rewatch of The Empty Man before it leaves HBO Max on the 30th. Insane that it's not even available on home media; it has the makings of a future cult classic.
Ooh, definitely recommend to anyone who hasn't seen. I quite liked it, if even a tad long.

It's an embattled graphic novel adaptation that never got a proper theater release due to the studio losing faith after initial test screenings, but you can totally sense the dedication that went into making the film. It's not perfect, but it's damn respectable and deserves so much better than the treatment it's gotten.

I just learned now that the director David Prior led an episode of Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities coming to Netflix Oct. 25!

That's one I've been wanting to watch...but never get around to it.

Not sure I'll be able to get to it by the end of the month, though. So I bought a copy on Amazon Prime. $9.99

Poltergeist (1982) 💀💀💀💀🦴

Loved this movie since I first saw it when I was a kid...I couldn't watch the face-peeling scene at first, but I was 5.

This new 4K release looks and sounds amazing. And I liked this Steelbook art more then the regular retail version.

Goodnight Mommy (2022 Remake)

I usually go into remakes with low expectations and just hope for the best but considering this had Naomi Watts I was pretty excited to check it out. I admittingly fell asleep halfway through the original 2014 Austrian version and always meant to finish it but never did.

So, the first half of the 2022 version is really solid.. The atmosphere and acting just pull you in where you can't wait to find out wtf is going on and especially Naomi Watts as expected just killed the role. Sadly though, after about the mid way point this movie falls apart epically and somehow tops the horrible second half with an even worse ending. I really wish I would have gone back and finished watching the original now as i'm guessing this one probably mostly copied it so a lot of the suspense would be gone. Naomi Watts single handedly saves this film from being absolute trash but even with that I wouldn't recommend this clearly dumbed down American version unless you're really desperate for something new.

I actually like James Wan stuff including Malignant so I'll check this one out too eventually
