OK hear me out... I think I like this as much as H20. Maybe even more. I know it's technically not a better movie at all. The premise is really stupid but its a lot of fun. This movie is very 2000s and it brings Halloween into the 21st century with technology using webcams and cell phones. Michael Myers finished killing his sister so he's just trying to chill at home and these people are disturbing his peace so there's his motive. A lot of the characters are insufferable but I actually liked Busta Rhymes in this.

1408 was a bit of a welcome surprise for me. I'm really impressed at how consistently this movie hits its beats. A skeptical author known for documenting and scoring supposed haunts forcibly books a stay in New York's most haunted hotel room. His hubris is met with the a perfect foil in the tauntingly playful room with no purported return. I prefered this to most of the ConjuringVerse movies.

In a Violent Nature puts a spin on standard slashers by the we the viewers mostly following the killer instead of being chased with the survivors. It's a simple subversion that works well, though the methodical pacing of this is where those with short attention spans are likely to struggle.

26) Halloween H20 (1998)

My god... Josh Hartnett's hair is terrible in this. Mike Myers too. He looks weird in this one - the way his hair is makes him look a bit like a clown. Anyways, this was not bad. I wouldn't say it's anywhere near the original or even the second one. I think it's interesting how they brought Laurie back. I liked the ending... excited to see how he comes back from that for Resurrection....

It doesn't help that they didn't know what mask to use throughout the movie.

interesting... I didn't even realize. 4 is the one I was talking about that looks like a clown. 1 looks the best.

I liked this movie a lot too. I rented this on Blu Ray a long time ago and the Blu ray had like a ton of alternative endings. I actually don't remember how it really ended. I just remember I liked one of the alternative endings better. I should see this movie again.

Yes! This was my Hooptober selection for the "movie with multiple cuts" criteria. We watched on Peacock which only features the "theatrical" ending, but I read up on the other versions. The original downer of an ending didn't do well with test screenings, so they softened it. I thought it was a satisfying conclusion, but I do love ending on a good downer, so I think I would prefer most of the alternates ever so slightly.

Been wanting to catch the Substance and I was inspired by this thread to just grab a ticket and check it out. I have 30 minutes to kill before it starts so here’s some horror movies I’ve quite enjoyed recently.

Its actually a pretty good whodunnit but all the characters in this were so terrible that it got hard to watch towards the middle. I know that was the point but it got pretty unbearable. I couldn't root for anyone. I felt like it was meant to be funny but I didn't find it funny enough. I did laugh at the end though

Halloween
[2007] πŸ’€ πŸ’€ πŸ’€

This is a rewatch, but it's been about 15 years. I think this one gets far more hate than it deserves. Is it great? No. But it's a fun contemporary ultraviolent reimagining of a great movie. There are things I don't love about it, like the extra family history for Michael, and some elements that I think are fantastic, like Malcolm McDowell's turn as Dr. Obi-Loomis and the shots with small young Michael in the clown costume with the full-sized Michael mask. All in all, I think it's better than the majority of the sequels, and pretty much exactly what I'd expect from Rob Zombie.

29) Spider Baby (1967) πŸ’€ πŸ’€ πŸ’€ 🦴

This is messed up lol. Its a bit like The Hill Have Eyes except they all live in a house and just want people to leave them alone. Also, you feel empathy for this family. This movie has a great set up / slow reveal. It's also actually kind of funny. I enjoyed this.

30) As Above, So Below (2014) πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

I don't know why but I love cave style horror movies. The Descent is probably one of my favorites and this reminds me of that quite a bit. Its not perfect. Its a bit hectic and the handheld is a bit nauseating in the beginning but you get used to it. Also some parts of it is dumb like her speed running back through everything in 5 mins when it took them like 30 mins to get thru that originally. Even the ending... I don't know how I feel about that. But I liked the concept of the movie.

31) Inferno (1980) πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€
41588-inferno-0-1000-0-1500-crop.jpg

Dario Argento's sequel to Suspiria and expands it's lore a bit. This movie is stunning and beautiful to look at. Even more so than Suspiria. Very dreamy and almost like you're watching an abstract nightmare. I love the atmosphere of this movie. My issue with it is it has trouble focusing on a main character. You can't even really tell who's the "final girl" of this movie until you get to a point where oh, they're not dead yet. Its just scene after scenes of long drawn out exploration followed by death scenes for each character and some of these deaths are so stupid (IE death by cats / death by rats). I'm glad I watched it but I can't really say I loved it. Might be worth it just for the visuals alone.

Halloween II
[2009] πŸ’€ πŸ’€ 🦴

Too much grunting!
2007 felt like Rob Zombie doing a Halloween movie; 2009 felt like a Rob Zombie movie!
This was actually a rewatch but, honestly, I didn't remember a thing despite having watched it before. If this had been Zombie's first Myers movie, I think it would have been much more jarring but the way he set it up as the second helping makes the leaps he takes much more palatable, I reckon. I prefer my Michael methodical, silent and evil without reason, but I enjoy this one far more than many people seem to, nevertheless.

And, because nobody asked for it...

Here's my personal ranking of the Michael Myers movies (minus Halloween Ends, which I haven't seen and won't be watching this year--but do want to see):

  1. Halloween (1978)
  2. Halloween (2018)
  3. Halloween (2007)
  4. Halloween Kills
  5. Halloween H20: 20 Years Later
  6. Halloween II (1981)
  7. Halloween II (2009)
  8. Halloween V: The Revenge of Michael Myers
  9. Halloween: Resurrection
  10. Halloween IV: The Return of Michael Myers
  11. Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers
