Album of The Year - Endgame

My top albums of 1982:

1. INXS - Shabooh Shoobah
I went to see Adam Ant perform at St. John's University in 1982. Upon entering I saw a banner that said the opening band was something called INXS. I wondered what the hell "inks" was. They blew me away. It's a perfect album from start to finish. Possibly the best final song on a debut album ever, what a great finish. Never miss the opening bands at live shows!
2. Mission of Burma - Vs.
I wouldn't argue against this one as #1.
3. Brygada Kryzys - Brygada Kryzys
A great post-punk album; you have to wonder how hard this was to do in Communist Poland at the time.
4. Bad Brains - Bad Brains
Originally released on cassette, my dog chewed up a corner of the tape, but it still plays fine.
5. Sonic Youth - Sonic Youth
Arguably an EP because it's only 5 songs, but the band considers it to be its debut album. Not as good as 1983's Confusion is Sex but pretty damn good.
6. Descendants - Milo Goes To College
Debut album and just a ton of fun.
7. Clash - Combat Rock
The last studio album by The Clash. As far as I'm concerned.
8. Replacements - Stink
It's 8 songs so I'm calling it an album.
9. Waitresses - Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful?
Patty Donahue's vocals on this just grab me. With almost any other vocalist this album wouldn't work.
10. Cocteau Twins - Garlands
It's a great post-punk album IMO. They shifted to more of a new wave sound after this so subsequent albums didn't grab me.

pretty strong year, especially for oztrayan stuff, with seven of my top 20 local bands - and i wasn't even cognisant of music back in 82 cos i was three (other than my mum telling me i loved the "rock the casbah" clip when it aired on countdown)

it's a cultural bias but i don't care as they're all #classic

So listen to 'em! You've got all week. This thread has introduced me to so many awesome albums I never would have heard otherwise.

Thriller will still top my list because it’s a killer album and easily the biggest album of that year, if not the decade.

I think it absolutely took the gory details coming out to fully change people's opinion. Thriller would've won this in a walk had '82 been the first year of this series.

i don't think it should make a difference - it was well known that there were accusations that he was a paedophile long before the start of this year

tbh ever since the allegations appeared in the mid-90s i presumed the kids were telling the truth

still believe that thriller is an all-time classic tho
 
Lead Belly killed somebody, was released from prison, and then attempted to kill somebody else. Miles Davis beat his wife. John Lennon beat his wife and kids. Elvis was most likely a pedophile. Sid Vicious killed Nancy. Chuck Berry was convicted of armed robbery and later served time in prison for sex with a 14 year old girl. I’m not suggesting that these are all equivalent to each other or the allegations against Michael Jackson, but I’m firmly in the art-separated-from-the artist camp. However, I DO understand that some folks just can’t stand MJs music anymore because they strongly associate it with those detailed accounts. I don’t, as Thriller and Bad were a major part of the soundtrack to my childhood, and those memories and associations override anything more recent. i imagine I wouldn’t like the album very much if I did make those associations with it.

I think you might be missing my point.

I agree some people will still be able to separate the music from the person. I still enjoy spinning some Ryan Adams, and he's a jerk. not a groom and then rape multiple children level jerk, but still a jerk.

My point is that many, if not most, still clung to the thread of plausible deniability that MJ was just the victim of a lost childhood who chose to spend his time with children in 8-year-old's fantasy Neverland to connect with his (as opposed to other's...) inner-child and that those allegations were little more than the misunderstandings of an outside world.

He was a horrible, horrible human being who by and large was given the benefit of the doubt up until Leaving Neverland stripped away the last of the excuses people could possibly make for him.

Here on out his music is only played and/or defended through a lot of qualification and moral hand-wringing.

1979 was the 3rd on of these Woob lists back in October...Off the Wall finished 2nd. Thriller is still gonna get top 10 this week (somehow...) but I promise had these year's been swapped Off the Wall doesn't place and Thriller is the vote record holder.

4) Gun Club - Miami: I prefer Fire of Love but this album still rules, glad to see this popping up on others' lists

6) Bad Brains - S/T: discovered this album while working on my on again/off again ranking of American bands, instantly loved it
