Ah, someone else who prefers Workingman’s Dead over American Beauty. Cheers! 🍻

1970:
  1. Neil Young - "After the Gold Rush"
  2. The Stooges - "Fun House"
  3. Creedence Clearwater Revival - "Cosmo's Factory"
  4. Miles Davis - "Bitches Brew"
  5. Led Zeppelin - "Led Zeppelin III"
  6. The Who - "Live at Leeds"
  7. George Harrison - "All Things Must Pass"
  8. Nick Drake - "Bryter Layter" [EDIT, because technically a 1971 release]
  9. Curtis Mayfield - "Curtis"
  10. Cat Stevens - "Tea for the Tillerman"
  11. Van der Graaf Generator - "H to He Who Am the Only One"

That was incredibly hard to trim to just 10... and there is no clear #1 here for me - 1 through 10 could be rearranged on any given day.

American Beauty has one or two songs that aren’t up to the standards of the rest of the album or all of Workingman’s Dead.

Also, I don’t think there’s a better “the 60s are over” album than Workingman’s Dead - the lyrics are some of Robert Hunter’s most powerful and topical.

I think American Beauty has the better songs overall, but “Operator” and “Candyman” kind of bring it down a notch for me. And i LOVE Pigpen so it hurts saying that, but it’s just such a filler song. And something about “Candyman” has just never hit home with me. Sometimes I dig it, sometimes I don’t. Still an incredible album with some of their best and memorable songs.

It’s Operator and Til The Morning Comes for me that aren’t up to snuff.
