Bandbox: an uncompensated review of an interesting new club

Ah, bummer. Saw the banner on top this morning and could have sworn it said through 8/22 and was going to sign up when i got back home. All good. Thanks!
I think it was a little confusing. I believe it said ends 8/22 on the banner but their emails all said this weekend only and “through Sunday”. So I took that to mean that the deal is no longer valid when 8/22 rolls around. Worth an email to CS though to see!

Hey, fellow record collector!

You are receiving this email because you recently purchased a Bandbox Prepaid Subscription Plan. Due to overwhelming demand, our staff is working hard to get all the new plans set up in our system so new members can login and choose their album for the upcoming billing date of 8/28 to which your prepaid plan will officially start. Please expect some delays in the process but our goal is to have all new plans set up within 2-4 days from the purchase date. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through the nuances of our subscription management software. In the meantime, familiarize yourself with the member process on our FAQ page!

Additionally, if you were already a Bandbox member before purchasing the prepaid plan, no further action is needed as a code will be applied to your existing account according to the duration of the prepaid plan you purchased (i.e. 3-Month, 6-Month, 1-Year). Again, this update will be reflected in your account within the next 2-4 days.

Thanks for joining the club!
Didn't get this

I got the account activation email this morning, so it looks like I'm in the system now. How do you lock in your pick for the month? I only see the option for "default" and everything else just reverts to the cart like a new purchase.

go to my account, then manage subscriptions. You’ll see a thing that says active subscriptions then there’s an edit button that lets you choose the album you want

I got the “oh shit people like us, hang on a sec” email, which I gotta say I truly appreciate. This place kinda reminds me of the early days of the other service. Hope the burst of popularity doesn’t sour things on that front.

They processed mine just now and I went with Divine Fits for this month. I'd been eyeing it but wasn't ready to pay full price. I'm hoping that the Ziggy Marley is still available next month or the next announcement is something I'll be willing to give a try on.

And one thing I think they should do, despite how good they look, is move to a a standard brown mailer. The added ink in printing those isn't necessary or value add for me. I just want it secure. It doesn't need to look pretty.

I think I just made my first subscription selection/substitution (Divine Fits) and I've got to say that even with the FAQ video, the process is cumbersome and a bit frustrating (lots of clicks through the process before learning that a selection was sold out, for example), and it took a while to realize that for many of the artists there are multiple albums to choose from. Does each album by a particular artist come with the same booklet? And do any of the titles that are sold out ever see represses, or are they gone forever?

@Lee Newman Did you join this even though you just cut the cord with Magnolia?
I did not. I recently made the decision not to continue with the sub at this time (it does not quite fit into my listening for the most part, plus I have scaled back the amount of new stuff I am bringing in... time constraints with job and new kid and all). Anyhow, I thought about reupping for the price, but in the end it doesn't change that while I think it is a great service that only 50% of the titles appeal to me wasn't compelling enough even at the awesome price offered here. My daughter and I talked a bit about it this weekend and she came to the same conclusion.

Yea it’s not the best UI at all but you get used to it.

The sold out titles were limited to a number. It’s not like VMP where they will repress more of those as far as I know. But they have added warehouse finds and additional copies from somewhere a few times. They added 40 copies of Julien Baker last week that they found in their warehouse, for example.

If you go to my subscriptions and Divine Fits is there you should be all set. I believe every album comes with the same booklet for an artist.

Every artist usually has multiple albums. Typically it’s one BB exclusive then the rest are just normal pressings. I think there are a few exceptions like Waxahatchee, Johnny Cash and maybe one or two more.

How often do things go out of stock? Is it pretty quickly or does it take some time?

Depends on the album of course. Most of them were around for quite awhile until they had big sales. But they have also gotten more popular lately so a bit hard to tell! I imagine that exclusives will sell out quicker now if they added lots of members

The things that have disappeared the quickest most recently were Cap'n Jazz, Rainbow Kitten Surprise and hand poured of Atmosphere's God Loves Ugly. Usually if it is a title that has been OOP and it has limited numbers like the hand poured God Loves ugly, you are wise to jump on it.

I have a feeling exclusives will sell out quicker now with so many people joining and becoming aware of the company. It was pretty easy to get most of the other exclusives so far aside from the few you just mentioned. I think Vanilla Sky lasted quite awhile even though the price was great to begin with. Death Cab was up for awhile too and other "bigger" name artists.
