Max is such a competitor. He does not like to not play. So he must be in some really intense pain for him to scratch himself for a WS game. Which makes me very hesitant about him being able to play again in this WS. My heart fell into the bottom of my shoes when I saw the news come across my phone yesterday afternoon.
Yeah, the ump was not hugely great about the strike zone. But when the score is 7-1 and we strand a gazillion base runners (I think I saw a stat that said the Nats were 1 for 25 with runners on the bases these last few games, that is not good), an ump that is missing some balls and strikes is not going to make much of a difference. That loss was not the ump's doing at all. The Nats need to string together some hits.
I haven't seen that he is definitively out for a possible game 7, and everyone that has brought up game 7 has said they expect him to be ready. That could just be gamesmanship, but, that is what I kept seeing and hearing last night from the "experts". That said, back spasms seem like they could be a lingering issue, particularly the way he pitches.
As far as last night's ump goes, yeah, I'm not sure it is something that impacted the final result all that much. Still, you want consistency. Both teams want that. And some of those bad calls were ones that were inconsistencies from one batter to the next. I have to admit, that last strikeout Cole got was a gift. Maybe a makeup call, but it was a gift for sure. I get that human beings are going to make mistakes, but, they are supposed to have the best of the best in place for the World Series. So I hate that we are seeing some pretty glaring misses from some of the crew members when they get behind the plate.
