Baseball

Lol at the Astros being a scapegoat for a most likely widespread problem. It's one of the biggest non issues in sports imo. I still have no problem with what they did. Also I agree with adding more playoff teams, Baseball will die without them. Someone compared it to the NBA in a negative context, like the NBA doesnt thrive while MLB is fading.

All that being said Manfred might be the worst commish of all the major leagues.

I agree with with the widespread cheating. It’s gonna be funny as they continue to investigate and it becomes more clear how wide spread the issue is.

The NBA is great but it’s a different beast. You can’t have a 162 game season and then have nearly half of all the teams make the playoffs. The post-season is already a crap shoot and having an 78 win 7 seed win a World Series series would completely devalue the regular season. I am not a traditionalist and if they want to do things to make games more fun I am all for it, I just don’t think making the regular season matter less is the right answer.

Yea you'd have to cut into the 162, but I've been asking for that my entire baseball fandom. I just think in today's sports climate that all of the regular seasons have been devalued. The playoffs are what keep people excited and because of that MLB has the least amount of cities excited about their product. Not saying they need 16 playoff teams like the NBA, but more than 8 would be nice. I'll watch the Phillies this year when I have time, but if they were a playoff hopeful team I would make time for them and watch more games. Also fuck the wildcard play in game, if it ain't a series it ain't the playoffs

Totally agree about the play-in game. I would prefer every series a minimum best of 5.

Nope, not scapegoats. They cheated. I'm not sure how knowing they did and asking that they be punished is making them a scapegoat.

And if other teams cheated, expose them, fine them, ban them, whatever needs to be done.

Baseball is not dying. There are things to change and fix but it isn't dying. There's a lot of hyperbole in your statement.

As is the tradition, this will be stationed within arms reach of my recliner for the next 8 months or so. My annual copy Baseball Prospectus may be my favorite thing I get in the mail all year. It signifies the start of baseball season almost as much as pitchers and catchers reporting. Also the Chi Sox might actually be fun to watch this season (I am cautiously optimistic). I am also the commissioner of a decade strong 12 team Fantasy Keeper league which is about as fun as rooting for the good guys (about). ⚾ ⚾ ⚾ !!!

I need to pick this up.

isn't NBA extremely lax on copyrights and sharing of content on social media?

Before and after pretty much every game is "cannot re-use without the express written consent of Major League Baseball" etc. If more people are able to engage with any kind of MLB content then more people will be into baseball. So what if @AstrosSuck69 posted a compilation of all the home runs in the World Series and has 50k views on twitter. People are seeing that and might end up following baseball if it's easy for them to do so.

It's kinda the same thing with music, at least for me. I download A LOT of music without paying for it. I'm not going to throw $10 on mp3s or $20 on an LP on something I haven't heard before. I don't pay for Spotify/Apple anything, so that's the way I go. I become a fan of the music in that trial period and then maybe buy an LP later or go to a show and then when they release something new I might pre-order an LP. The threshold for myself become a fan was a zero and now I'm following all these bands I wouldn't have before. It can be the same for MLB.
This on the sharing to social media by MLB. I heard Pitching Ninja, which if you haven't checked out you should, had a tough fight to be able to continue posting content. They're one of the best things out there to promote baseball, and MLB is just clueless on this new era of sharing. They could really use this to push the game.

I disagree. While I do believe there's other teams doing this, I believe it's only a handful. I do believe that the Astros cheating caused a ripple effect across MLB that forced teams to have that discussion. Should we cheat or not? The most prevalent people being target are from the '17 Astros.
And I think those speaking out against it i.e. Cody Bellinger, Mike Trout, and Jack Flaherty are not cheating.

Astros stole a lot from other players... WS Bonuses, MVP titles, possible endorsements, things that were not earned honestly. Day by day more players are speaking out... and it's not good. Manfred has put more discipline on possible HBP than actual discipline Astros got.

Manfred is terrible for the sport. Wanting to add multiple things that do not make baseball any better.I'm fine with how it is now, just add better streaming and higher discipline for infractions like these.

Also: don't take the Mike Schildt Interview as me saying Cardinals are 'heaven sent'., cause I know that conversation will come up :cautious: rather the type of conversations that were probably going on around MLB with managers and coaches due to the ripple effect.

I dont see stealing signs as cheating. Yes they brought it to another level, but I'm still not convinced they were the only team doing it at that level. That's part of the reason MLB is trying (and failing) to sweep this under the rug so quickly because they know they wouldnt like what they find if they did a league wide investigation. MLB has more cheating scandals than any other league and rarely do the cheaters get punished.

And no MLB isnt going to die in our lifetime and will always be a profitable business as long as it has no real summertime competition. When I say its dying I mean in peoples interests. Attendance has been down almost every year this decade and intrest in non competitive markets is at an all time low. Expanding the playoffs breathes life into more franchises and forces owners to put out a more competitive product which would hopefully cut down on the amount of teams that trot out all star lineups year in and year out.

Many steroid users spoke out against other steroid users. I dont trust any of them.
Yeah, we are gonna find out it’s a systemic problem and while the Astros were the most bold and egregious there will be MANY others, if not every team would likely be indicted in using some form of tech to assist in stealing of signs. They should do an complete independent investigation then come up with clear and direct rules and punishments to enforce sign stealing tech. Then they should use tech to beat tech. Why not let the pitchers, catchers, and Managers have a radio earpiece where they directly communicate for the first 10 seconds of hopefully a soon to be enacted pitch clock.

100% agree with all of this.

However the second those earpieces go live, teams will start trying to find a way to intercept the signals
