Best Music 🎶 of 2022!

Still going to be at least two weeks until I get my albums list in order, but I feel like I can safely put this one to bed now, despite having a pair of EPs on my Radar List for this week. Those two EPs will also crack the 200-mark for the number of EPs I checked out this year. Here are my 16 favourites:

You all are great at dragging out my list making tendencies. I agree that woman have been killing it for the better part of a decade. They practically dominate modern indie rock and pop & r&b will alway be their kingdom queendom.

That said, I've been thinking a lot about how rare it is for a modern rock album to feel vital to me these days. In high school I was alt-rock / classic rock centric and in college most people would have said I was indie rock first and hip-hop second. The rock portion of my (roughly 500 album) record collection more than doubles up the rest of it. Yet, I had to go back to 2013 for the last time a rock album (Reflektor) topped my end-of-year list. Which then caused me to look up all of my lists and contrast what I had listed as my favorites at the time versus where I would place things now.

The main pattern? There were a # of pop, electronic and r&b albums that fundamentally changed my taste in both 15' and 16'- which then caused me to go back and explore albums I had previously written off as not for me. And also, a rap album has topped my year-end list a shocking # of times since 2014. 7 of the past 9 years. That's wild! I think it's because there is so much experimentation and genre blurring going on in hip-hop compared to rock & roll.

Does anyone else here consider themselves a lover of guitar based music, but find themselves dealing with the same struggle?

I think hip hop, pop, R&B, electronic, etc have become more commonplace to the independent music fan. Indie rock fans of 10 years ago may have scoffed at the inclusion of anything other than guitar based music.

As for your question, I do consider myself a lover of guitar based music. There’s loads of it still out there but it takes some doing to find it. Because of the introduction of other genres into the independent music fan’s listening, guitar based rock music that doesn’t immediately come across your bow, doesn’t get noticed.

If you are actively seeking it out and still not finding quality guitar based music, then it could all be subjective and it’s not as good as it once was for you.

Also I should say, I don’t really listen to hip hop or pop, I’m not really a fan, I respect it but I don’t like it too much. So I’m always looking for guitar based music or other genres that I like.

Admittedly, guitar based bands who became popular from 10-15, or 20 years ago usually release albums with a series of diminishing returns. Obviously exceptions apply. But also, if we only look for bands we loved 10-15 years ago and hear what they produce nowadays, it tends to be lackluster. Most of the “better” guitar based music is by newer bands with <10 years in existence or fewer.

This came out back on July 1st, and I can't remember where I came across it to pin it to a tab to check out later. I suspect maybe The Quietus, but don't know for sure and can't take the time to double-check right now. Either way, I'm really glad I checked it out!

Q4 Update

Total 2022 releases (albums/EPs/mixtapes) listened to as of December 16th: 191 320 424 504

Like with Q3, another 4x4 for the final quarter of the year, as the quantity of memorable releases was again somewhat diminished from Q1/Q2.

I am honestly taken aback by how much this year has strengthened my feelings about art pop being my favorite genre, with even more highlights in the final stanza of 2022. Björk, one of the OG art pop pillars, is still innovating 30+ years later. It has been implemented also in a Bolero/Latin fusion on Lucercia Dalt's unique ¡Ay!. Fievel is Glauque, a jazz-pop group so unmistakably taking notes from Stereolab, put forth a collection of short, quirky tunes. The singer/songwriter hybrid on Andrina Bollinger's under the radar Secret Seed was pointed out by @musicjunkiegreg, a gem that I've contemplated inclusion in my top50 for the year back and forth. A handful of others from the quarter.

If I had more time (or better yet, if it were released earlier in the year) to sit with Natalia Lafourcade's exceedingly impressive De todas las flores, it would have ranked quite easily in my top10 for the year. One to not overlook if you have any interest in Mexican folk music, bossa nova, vocal jazz, samba, or a pleasant singer/songwriter escapade.

Like before, no entries are ranked here; sorted in alphabetical order by band name/artist last name.
