Best Music of 2021

There doesn’t seem to be much of a consensus for the top 10 on any of these lists, which is really nice to see. Also the list I’m working on for myself isn’t like any of the ones I’ve seen so far.

I always get a little stressed at this time because I wind up finding new albums to listen to and then worry that I’ve neglected them (and others) from making it on my list. Which is just a stupid, ridiculous thing to feel.

yeah... like if I discover something new from a list and like it, do I think it's worthy of my own ranking? Do I need to "spend more time with it"? I was re-listening to the new Julien Baker yesterday for the first time in probably 4 months and it hit me differently than it did back in February/March. Maybe I'd like it more had it been released later in the year since it's fitting in nicely with colder weather.

Seeing the recent update with topsters2 and being turned off from what I had seen (can be found in my recent status update if you are curious). Given that I have had a fairly unproductive and lazy quarantine, I feel inspired now more than I have been in recent months. Posting here because the website has been used by some of you in this and related threads for creating and sharing your favorites from the year.

I'm going to program a chart maker for others to use here. I will try to give myself a deadline by the end of this year. Although my programming skills have become rusty over the past few years, as my job doesn't require it, I feel compelled as it may be of use to others here for this thread and others. I am open to any feedback from now to when it gets finished and is made available to you all.

I hope that everyone is doing well.

Guys, guys, guys!

Not my creation, but this alternate chart-making site has been active for a few days now: ostrakon. I've been playing around with it for the past 24 hours or so.

Things to mention about this chart-maker:

1) No tiers, but can be adjusted to up to a 12x12 matrix. No matter what dimensions you use, it will display in one screen without needing to scroll to see all entries for larger charts.
2) I would argue the dragging of entries within a chart is more convenient!
----a) Dragging an entry within the chart to an empty spot simply moves the entry to the empty spot, even if there are spots used in between.
----b) Dragging an entry within the chart to an occupied spot will move all entries in between (filled or unfilled) one spot up/down.
3) You can search not just for music and movies (like in topsters2) but also books, video games, and TV shows. I'm sure this website will have viability in other threads on N&G unrelated to music.
4) You can now give charts a title at the top. You can still have entry names displayed to the right, but can't edit font size/type.
5) Unfortunately, there's no way to search .jpg/.png images of albums on the internet if they are not in the library of searchable titles on ostrakon.
6) Downloading a chart (upper-right corner) seems to not be functional.
7) To remove an entry on the chart, simply drag it outside of the chart boundaries.
8) Doesn't feature a link on the left sidebar leading to nonsensical theories.

I still am very interested to make one of these chart-making sites as a project for a coding portfolio at some point, but I admit I was a bit in over my head for the lack of knowledge I have for this to be a first time project.
Hope that this is useful for all who are interested, since we are nearing year's end with many "best of" lists being made available.

Ostrakon? 🤔 Sounds like another COVID-19 variant 😂 No but seriously, thanks for sharing 👍

I'll have an updated list later today that sort of places my year in context before I start sifting through all these lists.

But as of now there are only 4 things I'm certain of--
1. 2021 was my LEAST favorite year of music since 2012. So in nearly a decade.
2. Despite that, it was a KILLER year for rap.
3. Audrey Nuna's Liquid Breakfast was my most listened to album of 2021.
4. The only albums I feel strongly about as instant classic are Idles: Crawler and Little Simz: Sometimes I'm an Introvert. I feel like Crawler is going overlooked because of its late release date but any list that doesn't include it is doing it wrong.

Hey there, ostrakon developer here! Thanks for checking out the site and sharing it. I saw in my server logs that people were coming from here.

Update: Today I added options for custom fonts and text color, as well as a toggle for the shadows.

I want to add multiple layouts like the classic tier format but it would be pretty challenging with the way I structured the code, so no promises there.

Another caveat with the site that's worth mentioning: it runs really slow on Firefox. The problem is mostly due to Firefox performance issues but there are some things I can do to partly alleviate it in the near future. If you're getting slow performance on Firefox, turning off shadows from the options menu will help a lot.

That was my first thought when they named the variant 😂 I launched ostrakon a few weeks ago though so it came first.
