Best Music of 2021

absolutely, it just feels so random it's their #1 choice when most publications have it nowhere near their top 10s. I think someone at Stereogum must really love it.

That is how lists should be made, ranking albums you really loved and not what other publications listed. On the other hand, and a reason why I avoid making lists, I always found it hard to say when an album is a good album. I can easily say why I love an album but does it means it is a a good album? The opposite is true too but why would I rank an excellent album if I find it a meh album?

To be or not to be, that is the question.

oh definitely! but it was random to me because I didn't see many other publications/people online saying it was AOTY worthy. I just thought it was an average album. I didn't think it had such acclaim.

I think it's more than just an average album, at least in my books. It's currently just sitting outside of my top 10, and on any given year, other than 2021, it would rank much higher ⬆️

It's no surprise from me after reading their premature evaluation for it where they routinely called it their best album.

Also War in Drugs lost me with their last one, but this one pulled me back in. I think it's their best since Slave Ambient and it would fall somewhere in the 30s if I ranked all of my favorites from the the year

That TWOD is bang average and I will die on that hill 💁‍♂️

lol at the #1 choice
If is a weird one, but there is a certain writer at Stereogum that has written about the last few WOD albums like they are the most complex, flawless masterpieces he’s ever heard. I mean I like them alright, but I don’t hear that in any of their albums.

Yeah, for me from Slave Ambient forward I feel like there is only slight progression between each record. WOD’s has stayed super consistent in quality with only minor refinements to their sound over each album. It would be hard for me to say some of those albums are mediocre while others are brilliant, I love them all. I think the biggest difference between the albums released during this run is where I was in my life at the time each album was released.

I mean it is stadium rock in the year 2021, so you're not wrong

I really, really loved Lost in the Dream and A Deeper Understanding, but this is just an 6/10 album. not bad, but not deserving of that #1 IMO.
