Ch Ch Ch Changes! - David Bowie Talk

Well, the announcement did motivate me to revisit those 90s albums. BTWN is weaker than I remember, and Buddha is not very interesting at all. On the other hand, Hours is waaaaay stronger than I remember, which is a bit shocking.

At this point, I'm 100% in on the reissues of Outside/Earthling/Hours, and lukewarm on the rest.
I put BTWN just a notch above Never Let Me Down, so definitely bottom of the Bowie albums. Pallas Athena is what saves it for me.

I came back to Buddha a few years ago and it really grew on me. For me it is a real headphone album.

I was just going over them again. Buddha is much better than I remember. Black Tie is a record I liked back then and it's pretty much as I remember. Outside I played a lot when it came out but I find it didn't age well except for a few songs. Same with Earthling. Still like them, but less than when they were released. But Hours is way better than I remember - that one aged very well. I also really like the samples of Toy I heard.

Mixture of more discs (5LPs more than 1st 3 and 3 more than 4) increased production costs as opposed to 2015–2018 and the fact that there is more demand allowing them to charge more.
How many people do you think will want this box set? It's got to be for the very niche Bowie collector.

I have a press of Earthling/Hours/and the RSD press of Outside. I'm interested in Buddha and Black Tie because I haven't really listened to any of that. The ReCall with the soundtracks looks interesting.

I think it’ll be the second least popular after the last one from the 80s. It was a nice box but most of the music was pretty poor by his standards. I’ve kind of committed myself to getting his discography through the boxes, because it would seem that I’m insane, so I’m all in…

I really like the Toy bootleg that was floating around for a few years. A few of the songs were great and translated well to the live setting. Funny that they could have left Toy for the final box set and saved us all some money.

If they’d left out the fucking pointless Visconti remixes and the second version of Stage they could have got the 70s into 2 boxes and saved us even more again!

Definitely a more niche time period. I think that is why they made it cover so many years to ensure maximum buy-in. Compared to box #4 which was Let's Dance and a bunch of crap that no one wants, I am looking forward to this box. I spent years hating Earthling but some of it has really grown on me because of the 6 live sets they released last year.

yeah they had to put let’s dance into 4 to sell it, the rest is really slim pickings, we didn’t even get the Labyrinth Soundtrack in it!

Yup. Stage you got a remastered version on 2xlp yellow and then a remastered and expanded/reordered 3xlp version.

Box 3 really took the biscuit. I didn’t need an EP with 2 versions of Heroes in German and 2 further versions of it French, 2 copies of Stage and 2 copies of Lodger. Cut those an the second copies Station to Station, Ziggy and Live from the first 2 boxes and you’ve a better set for one box less.
