Can it be matted without tape? That's the route I've always gone.

I'm not sure, waiting on the frame and matte to arrive and just wanted to have supplies ready. I did find this video and he seems to use acid free tape to tape the picture (or print in my case) to the matte.

I have used framers tape, something like this

Just got these back from the framer, thanks to a couple Christmas gifts toward the purchase.

I've been waiting for the foil Mexico City poster from The National, but the tracking hasn't updated since the 9th after it got to the regional hub. Their CS just said it's still on its way so they won't help. Very irritated because I want the poster and I'm going to be pissed if they can't send me a replacement now.
