Day 4: Concept Album

It's as good a day as any to break the seal on this one. I have a lot of mixed feelings on Kanye and have tried to come to terms with all of his...self I guess. I've also never been a huge fan of his music (brilliant but not my speed) so it was easy to ignore it... Except for this. I still think this is one of the greatest albums of all time. The musicality, features, production and the entire flow is just on another level.

The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots

This was the album where The Flaming Lips actually clicked for me. Prior to this release I had really only enjoyed a few songs (though a friend picked up Ziareeka from Columbia House and I did rather enjoy the logistics if not the actual end project). Something about this album though click right away. I also love the concept. Initially I thought it to be rather straightforward futuristic anime type story about a woman battling robots. I would later learn that while it was about that it was also an allegorical story about a woman’s fight against cancer (the pink robots sent here to destroy us, are in fact cancer) listening to it after this discovery added much more weight to the songs and the album overall. “Do You Realize”especially became even more powerful from within this contextual realization. Also, the songs are all really damn good.

Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf

This one lacks a bit of stringency on being a concept album, as it details the protagonist hearing mixed messages on a drive beginning from Los Angeles all the way to Joshua Tree, while changing radio stations. Perhaps a drive simply made for getting away from his/her personal problems?

Did you know they did a musical based on this? I was lucky enough to see it when they ran it, and thought it was really well done, especially the technical aspects / puppetry of the robots. Strong mix of Yoshimi, Soft Bulletin, and Mystics songs. I was surprised given the popularity of 'concept' musicals based on albums that it never made it further than the initial run.

That is rad and surprising. I would have loved to see it.

King's X - Gretchen Goes to Nebraska

Based on a short story written by their drummer (Jerry Gaskill) which I admittedly have never read.

I haven't spun this in forever, it was a staple among my friends and I back when it came out in the late 80s. I remember seeing these guys at a dive bar on a Wednesday sometime around that era, they were an awesome trio.
