December 2020 Challenge Thread: Let's Go Out With A Bang (The return of the raffle!)

Day 3 - Ozzy

Lita Ford - Lita
Contains Ozzy’s first (only?) top 10 song, “Close Your Eyes Forever”
View attachment 78593

That was his only top tenner for 30 years until this collab he did with Post Malone & Travis Scott last year (if you count features, that is...):

I really wish I had that album right about now, as the only 2 Ozzy records I have have both been taken.

Day 3: Ozzy's 72nd Birthday
Damn he's getting old haha, play something from The Prince of Darkness or the oldest album in your collection

Various Artists - Trolls World Tour Soundtrack

Gosh, I’m sorry you guys. The closest thing I have to Ozzy is a cover of “Crazy Train” on this soundtrack. This record gets a surprising amount of the play in this house, my kids love it.

Day 2: Finally!

I don't keep a wishlist or anything (sorry Secret Santa), so it's usually just something that pops up as a reissue or if I'm digging and something that I haven't seen catches my eye.

This record was one that I have a couple US pressings of (one is a test pressing), but the US mix is different than the original German mix - and this Spanish pressing uses the original German plates. It also has the artwork turned around to where the usual rear sleeve art is now the front sleeve art.

Nektar ‎– Recycled
Bacillus Records/CFE ‎– YD-99010, 1975/1976

Spanish pressing - uses original German plates.

Day 3: Ozzy's 72nd Birthday

I went with this compilation...too bad it sounds like shit. Ugh...it's terrible. I'm not one that complains a lot about dynamic range, but this is just awful.

Ozzy Osbourne ‎– Memoirs Of A Madman
Epic/Legacy ‎– 88875015611, 2014

Day 4: Concept Album

RIP Frank

The concept album that started it all. This influenced the Beatles in making Sgt. Pepper - to which Frank felt that the Beatles were insincere and "only in it for the money"

The Mothers Of Invention ‎– Freak Out!
Verve Records ‎– V/5005-2, 1966

Mono - Hot Spot ad in gatefold

Day 4: Concept Album - Play a concept album

Childish Gambino - Because the Internet

For me, after listening to the Dissect podcast breaking down this album, Because The Internet is the ultimate concept album. Donald Glover took what can define an album to a whole new level. Donald blurred the lines between himself and the character of the story throughout the release of the album and even wore the same clothes while out, kind of like a cartoon character always has the same outfit on. The album came with an associated 72 page screenplay that interacted with the songs on the album. Plus, the live show continued that narrative and really played on the screenplay and story of the album. Hell, even the album cover was different because it's actually a gif. All of those things, plus the fact that this album is fantastic put this up there as one of the all time great concept albums for me!

Here's the podcast if you're interested:

Day 4: Concept Album

David Bowie - Diamond Dogs

Like the best concept albums, the story is just the thinest line travelling through the record. Originally meant to be a musical version of Orwell's 1984, it is based around some of the writings of William Burroughs, though still has a song called 1984 and another called Big Brother. Not only do you get the title track and Rebel Rebel, you get the Sweet Thing/Candidate suite which I think is one of Bowie’s greatest moments.

Day 4: Concept Album

The Kinks - Arthur or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire

One of my favorite bands, but I seem to forget to listen to this one (hot take: I like Preservation Act 1 more!). This album is apparently about a carpet-layer and was intended to be a soundtrack for a TV program that was never made.

Day 4 - Concept Album

Fugees "The Score" (1996 Columbia; 2016 club reissue)

A quote I got from the interwebs while I was digging for ideas for what to play today:

In regard to The Score's unified themes and production, Lauryn Hill commented, "It's an audio film. It's like how radio was back in the 1940s. It tells a story, and there are cuts and breaks in the music. It's almost like a hip-hop version of Tommy, like what The Who did for rock music."
