December 2021 Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread: ‘Tis The Season Of Giving

Day 27 - Unique

Had a tough time finding what exactly was sampled for "Wood", but based on the tone and Rostam's heritage, I have to believe sitar/jimbe/dulcimer was a part of it. At the very least, the song reminds me of hearing my grandfather play all these instruments while growing up.

Day 27 - Unique
Play something that prominently features a unique or uncommon instrument

How about unique / uncommon uses of the most common instrument? Primarily vocals, featuring everything from modern singers like Mike Patton & Rahzel to Inuit Folk Singer Tanya Tagaq.

Day 26: Charity

I dont have any records about charity and every album that I've bought that proceeds to go charity has been digital - but @nolalady gave me an idea. N&G has a "goodwill" thread that allows us to pass along albums you don't listen to that others might enjoy called the Pay it Forward thread. This was the first PIF i've ever received - and it was from @Woob_woob (altho I think he passed this when we were still on VMP forums)

This album is still a stormer!

"Instrument" is subjective I guess but this album soundtrack makes use of the Yamaha YM2612 synthchip which I wouldn't really call uncommon but is used to produce a lot of Sega Genesis soundtracks. And you don't really see it in anything else really. This one in particular is badass. To be more clear - the "instruments" are keyboards arranged in PC - but the soundchip is what produces this sound.

here's a dude that built a setup that directly uses the chip from the genesis.

Wham! - Last Christmas” b/w “Everything She Wants

Wham!’s royalties from the original single release went to the Band Aid Trust to help fight the famine in Ethiopia and they’re also my two favourite Wham! songs, so they tend to put me in a happy mood most of the time (not always charitable per say, but happy).

Various – Songs For You, Vol. 1

This record engenders two-way goodwill feelings and memories for me. I was happy to pick it up as a fundraiser for black-owned record stores; and was also happy for this to be the first of many acts of goodwill I've received from the N&G community since landing here last spring when @waruv snagged this copy for me!

...and, to me, Roberta Flack's "What's Going On" was/is worth the price of the record alone.

Day 28 - Comic Books

I'll always be grateful for Stan Lee's contribution to superheroes. I wish I could explain to him how much I needed it growing up. R.I.P. Stan Lee (also Steve Ditko, but its not your birthday today).
