Definitive Audiophile pressings

Chad stated they already sold 30% of the KOB 45s.
I don’t believe that at all. He was trying to sell hype on YT.
It's going to be in stock for awhile at $175 shipped IMO.

So many Mike's these days.
It seems PhoenixMike is also trying to salvage a relationship with Mofi so I take some things he says with caution, especially with the Thriller even though I am not that consumer. I'm sure there have been some back door discussions with Mofi after the bomb dropped.
In the end, he's a record salesman.

I do think the VC will reject the $100+ LP that is not cut from master tape... no matter how super quadruple the vinyl compound is marketed.
MOFi need PhoenixMike more than he needs them. Now, more than ever, MOFI needs customers like him to sell their records. In The Groove is an important customer for MOFI.

BTW, line up the analog SC Santana Lotus, an original Japanese pressing, and the DSD256 MOFI and see which is better. I have, and not even close - the MOFI. It has a stickedr on it clearly stating DSD256 source, and it sold like crazy in Japan - but was never put out here.

I have a really clean '74 JP copy.
I don’t think the mastering is all that great but it's been a while since I played it.
Highs can be a bit ear piercing if I remember correctly.
Good time to dust it off this weekend.

I have both and agree, the Mofi Lotus smokes the Japanese OG, which I loved before I got the Mofi.

If anyone's is looking for a copy of the Japanese one, RCJP just got a copy in that's going for around $25 for a vg+. Which is the best price/condition value you can get on that.

Back in the day, the MOFI KOB was considered by many to be superior to the Classic Grundman KOB, as the MOFI has fuller bass and richer tonality, benefitting from Mark Wilder's 3 track remix. Plus the stereo Classic has the typical hole in the middle of the period. I sold my Grundman Classic and stuck with the MOFI.

Funny how things can change.
I happen to like the UHQR better. The MoFi’s bass sounds less natural to me than the UHQR and is a bit too full/bloated for me on my system. The UHQR strikes a better balance for me. Plus I just like the 33 format better. The MoFi sounds better than some of my early stereo copies though.

If anyone wants to hear Bernie Grundman talk for 115 minutes while Chad, RKS, and Michael 45 sit there and watch, check out the live stream they did earlier.

All joking aside, it was informative and they took plenty of subtle jabs at MoFi in the process.

Michael 45’s latest quest seems to be sourcing OG pressings and A/Bing them to MoFi to say how much better the OG is. I’m sure it brings him great solace. And I enjoy his channel! It’s just like, ok man! 😂

What early ST copies have you heard/owned?

I’ve got this one that’s pretty clean:

And used to have other older pressings (had a 1964 stereo and a late 60s stereo) but sold them after I got the UHQR. Not that easy (or cheap) to find super clean early copies. I don’t doubt that an OG would beat all of them but can’t afford one haha

I think that is a fairly well received copy.
I have a really clean 1970 ST.

I was reading that Columbia switched over to the Newman lathe around this time (1968) so earlier pressings are from that tube Scully.

I really like the early Columbia stuff. It does have a unique musical sound.

Looks like some Stevie Ray Vaughn and Eagles Utradiscs available as well.

My day started off pretty shitty. I was putting some stuff away for my wife in the garage and some loose decorations poked me in the eye, scratching it. So after a few hours of pain, salve and an eye patch, I was able to move around with one eye open without causing the other to just buckle me.

...............so what better to do when you're forced to keep your eyes closed than to do a little critical listening, lol.

I want to thank @TenderLovingKiller® again for hooking me up with this pressing, it's been a back burner grail only because I've never found an "acceptable" copy at a good price, and just as unfortunate, a Discogs seller that seemed accurate in his grading.

This copy, outside of the most minor jacket issue is pristine, so thanks again :)

I've always considered this album a bit "thick", like a blanket of sound, a lot of the sound is in the same register and tends to come across a bit muddy at times, some pressings/masters, pushing Bowies vocals up to the front and brining out the higher register a bit to "force" some separation. Putting the current MoFi hub-bub aside, what this pressing and mastering does amazingly is keep that lush thick blanket intact, but with natural separation and clarity. All of the layers of that "blanket" are on full display to the listener.

In my opinion, by far the best I've heard this album sound, the "unveiling" of all those layers kind of gave the album a completely different mood, and not in a bad way. Recommended if you can get a nice copy at a good price.

Time to close my eyes again, typing with only one is more challenging than you would think ;)
