Definitive Audiophile pressings

Craft opened their vault and found some things

I highly recommend that Parish Hall title…it’s 🔥

I was going for mono in the beginning but found the ST for $33.

I haven't heard both versions yet but the ST sounds great. Has some extra pictures and a writeup included. The extra takes are take it or leave it.

I think I prefer the stereo, but have gone through 3 copies to get one without an issue. On first listen the stereo definitely had the bigger impact for me, but haven't listened to the mono for a little while. They are both great. I could easily change opinion with more listening.

Might not be a popular view but some of the playing on the extras is outstanding. Definitely not a cohesive masterpiece like the album, but I'm very glad a picked it up.

What's the consensus on the Blue Train TP. If you were to get just one would you do the stereo or mono?
For what it's worth, Kevin Gray said he prefers the mono himself. Says that Rudy used to ride the reverb levels live and the stereo one has a bit more reverb in one channel, and that is mitigated a bit in the mono.

I don't have much need for the extra takes--those never interest me too much past one listen.

I am curious how they cut newer mono releases.

Is it still with the ST head or does KG use a differenthead for mono?
I believe newer mono releases are almost entirely cut with stereo cutting heads and they aren't "true" mono. You do have some releases like ERC that cut in true mono and have mono grooves. I also think Classic Records may have done a true mono series when they were in business.

Mass market releases like these Tone Poets wouldn't use a mono cutting head as I believe that would introduce more noise for the large majority of people using stereo carts

Yeah that's was my line of thought.

I've noticed the trick in the 60s (i.e. Prestige) was to recut a mono tape on stereo head and call it a stereo remaster. Those are best played mono regardless.

True. True mono cutting hasn't been done for decades. The last I know of, ignoring the ERC reissues, would be the Classic Records BN mono series, that used a tube mono cutting head/amp. There really is no advantage with a mono cutting head as there is no mass market mono equipment made, and it would present disadvantages to those with stereo carts - 99% I would expect.

Well, for those enjoying a mono cart, it's really a glorious spin when you can get the signals lined up. I know the market is ST carts. Thus a biz decision to cut ST.

Truly cutting mono would be sweet.

Meanwhile, this old mono stuff sounds really nice.

Been working on a 10 page paper this weekend and decided to take a break and visit Amoeba. Probably wasn't a good idea.

Anyway, was disappointed with the mastering on WGO. Compared to KPG's mastering, it's night and day. IIRC, they also had several 1 steps including Portrait in Jazz, Tapestry, Folk Singer, and Monk's Dream.

Yea and ONLY this deluxe one I believe is cut by KG. The other represses seem to be the old cuts. Craft did confirm this is digital high res source

Discogs entry has some discussion in comments:

I'll probably stick with my 2017 AAA (side one) KPG cut to stick to a holiday vinyl diet.

Anyone looking for the DCC pressing of Aqualung? Going to be listing it soon. (was purchased sealed recently and is MINTY) Unfortunately, it does have a warp to it but a buddy of mine just purchased the Record Pi flattner so it'll be perfect! Since I only paid 80 for the Mofi, I'll let the DCC go for the same price for anyone in here :)
