Definitive Audiophile pressings

Anyone with this press care to weigh in on quality? Or recommend a better press that isn’t expensive?

my 1971 original is pretty clean, but the cover is rough.

It’s okay, definitely serviceable. I’m a little spoiled by all my Miles audiophile quality releases, so it’s not the first one I reach for

I have this -- but I'm away from the house and couldn't give another listen for week. IiRC, I liked it although it isnt a MoFi Jack Johnson :) I don't have an original to compare to but it was a stronger recording than digital and my previous copy. I can listen to it in a week and report back, but as long as you aren't paying a premium it should be a good value, quality spin.

Yea— I have both from the disk union series already. The newks thing isn’t just some forum post or tweet though, it’s from an actual article. so that’s why I took it a bit more than one of us just passing it off as fact.

And 2012 was 10 years ago already. Very possible something from the tape got damaged since then. Lots of records have been done one last time from analogue tapes (the KG Van Morrisons, Waltz for Debby, Charlie Brown Xmas all come to mind).
The tape for Newk's Time was damaged at the time of the MMJ. Rambach sent me a TP (still have it) before it was finalized, he loves the record but was not certain about pressing it up due to the clear sonic issues. I heard the issues pretty clearly, but still, it has historic and musical value, so it came out, warts and the rest.

The tape issues are with the stereo tape only, the mono tape is fine.

I doubt the stereo will ever be attempted from the master tape again AAA.

Whoa!! Didn’t know this was gettin a MoFi. Gonna need to preorder. Any retailers ever go lower than list price on MoFi titles anymore?

That kind of makes sense. The BST was released quite a bit later in '66 so several years after the mono.

Interesting comments from Harley and SH. Doesn't appear to be any tape damage afterall.

I'm pretty fired up about getting an OG BST now.

Here’s a cool one that just came in. The verve online store was selling a bunch of test pressings and seemed they accidentally sold a few of these

Looks to be from the AS series although that hasn’t even been announced yet (and might not possibly come out?). RKS and Sterling in the deadwax

Does Music Direct have any coupons available at the moment? ( Do they ever?)

Edit: also anyone ordered from them to Canada? If you selected the USPS shipping option do you get hit with duties?

I think on a blue moon they do a 10% off thing, but if I remember right it doesn't work on any of the "good" stuff.

Depending on what you're looking for, get_importcds is having their spend $65 get 20% off on ebay, and they have a few MOFI titles I've seen on there so far including:

Simon and Garfunkel
The Rascals
ELO
T. Rex

I'm still looking to see what else they might have.

Friday Night in San Francisco
Saturday Night in San Francisco

and several of the Intervention Records are on there (not a great deal on those though).

That's interesting, I don't believe they used to have USPS as an option. I'm almost positive they didn't. In theory you might be able to avoid duty going that route. Or at the very least you'll avoid the "convenience fee" that the couriers charge.

It says "USPS (First-Class Package International Service)" for 1 item.

I really want that "In A Silent Way" MFSL. Not sure if those will become available this side of the world. Would be $62 shipped to Canada - not too bad if they don't tack on GST/carrier surcharges.

I mean you certainly might just get standard duty which would be about 13% I think. Just depends whether they decide it's worth it at the border for such a low cost item. I finally got dutied on about $80 declared worth of stuff from Japan so that's the first time I've been hit, but that was DHL so it's not surprising. But you'd probably be okay? But I'm certain that option for USPS did not exist even earlier this year.

Yes, my bad memory. The issues are not damage, it just sounds like it. Sonny is all over the place, so the amount of off-mic drops is disturbing. Rambach insisted on doing the stereo, holding on to his opinion that the stereo tapes always sound better, but in this case, mono is the way to go.

You will always get hit with charges from courier companies (DHL, Fedex, UPS) because their systems are automated to calculate and add duties, taxes & brokerage - so there is no delay to next day or two day shipping options. The package never hits a customs agent at all. No convenience fee- it is a fee for brokering your package, again, necessary to have it escape any delay or scrutiny by the customs service.

For regular mail like USPS, mostly you will not (unless it is a fairly large $$ order).

When using a courier, I ask for value to be marked as $20. Most will do it. That is the threshold for duties, taxes and the like.

Yeah in this case it's the only DHL shipment from Japan that I got hit with because it was 4 albums and whereas when I ask they usually put the value at ten dollars each, in this case they did $20 and that triggered the charges. But generally I've been able to avoid them by asking like you said.

I don’t think there’s any way Chad doesn’t release this, given his recent relationship with Verve/Impulse. I would bet this gets released sometime 2023 and Center Stage (owned by Verve) was just selling their TPs. They also sold the Roy Haynes “Out In The Afternoon” AS TP that doesn’t have a release date yet per AS. I have a hard time believing Chad would pass up the opportunity to make a lot of money in this one, especially if they’ve already gone through the process of mastering, cutting, and test pressing it.
