Definitive Audiophile pressings

I typically buy most live Newport fest vinyl since I live here, so I took the plunge at $19 bucks on Amazon and should get it on Thursday. I can report back.
I ended up ordering it from amazon after hearing one or two good reviews. i've been streaming the album non-stop the past few days. i doubt it's audiophile sounding (Seems like a decent soundboard recording but nothing special based on streaming) but the performance is absolutely killer

The original japanese pressing is quite good as well. I've had good success with Japanese Motown releases from the 70's and early 80's.

I'll have to go back to this as I don't remember this being especially great - JMHO but you should be careful with later Japanese Motown presses - in general there are multiple issues of these albums as many were from huge artists - like Mr. Gaye - In general I feel that 2nd and 3rd presses from Japan, easily recognizable by the catalog number starting with 'V' - are seriously inferior to earlier presses usually with a catalog number starting with 'S' even though both are from the same manufacturer - this is also true with the Hi Records catalog - there are exceptions of course and YMMV but many first press soul/r&b records from Japan sound amazing (especially the Hi Records)

also some records like Here My Dear and my favorite I Want You first pressings have 'V' catalog numbers - I Want You cat.no VIP6309 is more than decent but I do think this title could use a real audiophile working over

Motown stuff in general hardly ever gets a good modern reissue. The big exceptions being that Kevin Gray Motown in Mono series and the Kevin Gray What's Going On 50th anniversary. Luckily though, all those Tamla/Motown original pressings from the mid-late 70s releases sound pretty dang good. Much better than early 70s Motown releases.

I only have experience with this one, Stevie's Songs in The Key of Life (I've heard both the 76 and 80 and they're both pretty much identical and quite superb), Innervisions 1977 (also superb) and Rick James Street Songs 1981 (again, superb). I know others on here have heard the Stevies at least. Anyway, the Japanese Here My Dear I have handily beats the current reissue and was relatively affordable.
