This is pretty typical for KG as I hear his work. Yes, depends on the album, but it’s how most of his stuff sounds relative to/compared to the other people doing reissues these days.

I mean they had two different tapes and 45 vs 33 is not a great comparison either. I try not to make too much of it. Both have their highlights in this scenario.

Yeah this is seems to be more apparent on the rock albums, especially if you have a really precise listening rig.
Kind of need some low level distortion (i.e. tubes) to break things up a bit.

It's far less noticeable on the jazz cuts.

I think it’s perfect for The Cars and Doobies though.

Hot take coming in: all this jazzbo work KPG has done the last 5 or so years has ruined him for rock records.

His rock albums from 10-15 years ago are excellent. Great soundstages, but he was sympathetic to how the album was recorded. If there was bleed through of drums into the guitar track he didn’t try to correct that. Then he started to work harder to isolate the tracks and intstruments with all all the work he has done with Blue Note and this has affected how he approaches rock albums.

His rock albums from 10-15 years ago are excellent. Great soundstages, but he was sympathetic to how the album was recorded. If you listen to other versions of the Cars and Doobies, they are crisper and better separated too. It probably has as much to do with how the artist recorded things as anything else.

I like the old sterling mastering sound a lot.
Whatever they did back then, the recipe was superb for the crank dial.

But I don't hate on the KG at all. It's just a different sound and like it for what it is.
Television get's all kinds of polarizing opinions. Probably the most controversial of the RHF bunch.

He’s also turning 70 this year. I still like his rock cuts but he just doesn’t do quite as many.

I could see that.

I also think his console is blitzed out to be so precise that it comes through with the newer multi-track cuts.

It’s really good. Decent rise in detail but I have not had a bad pressing that way. The revelation is that the bass is huge. The kick drum and the guitar lines where Jack is using that bass pedal really do shake your bones.
