Definitive Audiophile pressings

Maybe I have missed some new non SuperVinyl 33 announcements, but at least around here many have been 45 only or SV.

Was just trying to state my observation that for some reason (to me it seems to be $$$) they are shifting to fancier than "just" 33 being their focus and they are raising prices quickly, including on just their upcharge for 2xLP, which doesn't really seem defensible to me, so I am less likely to support them.

My point being, their pricing in the past (even for 2xLP) was easier to describe as a reasonable purchase to consider and now they are moving hard for the "luxury treat" characterization and that is something I can't justify most of the time at this point in my life/financial situation. Especially not when I have a copy I'm happy with or a well regarded original or current reissue is available for 1/2 the price. For everyone that can justify the splurge, I'm glad they're excited about it. I'll try to stop reiterating this.

Oh no I’m talking normal vinyl with the 33s. There are still a good amount of them knocking about. There are, as on now only 2 non one step super vinyls that I know of, both in small numbers and both previously pressed on normal vinyl, so it’s still very early days on them to be going hard one way or the other.

I know I was just saying I haven't seen many good new normal 33s announced. Certainly not the bigger sellers. For instance, even though I had a good copy of Electric Warrior, I might have picked up a 33, but had to pass on the 45. Maybe it's just a coincidence and there have been some weird licensing issues, not sure.

Looks like since 2019, majority new 33s are dollar bin records. All the heavy hitters have been 2xLP. Including one-steps, there have been almost 3 times as many new pressings at 2xLP and many better titles.

Yeah I take the opposite view with MoFi and AP normal pressings. 99% of the time I’d not go there. If I do it’s a big album and I’d rather pay the extra for the 45. I view them as a special treat for an album that’s worth it 🤷🏻‍♂️

Isn't it a lot more than $35 for you to get a 33? For me most are great pressings at a decent price (barely more than lot of people are trying to charge for GZ DMM lately) and IF I ever want to sell really hold their value or increase a lot if out of print. Been since the Davis releases that I jumped on one though.

Well yes but not because they are charging more. That’s due to lack of supply chain and paying either for stores that cut in an extra margin for themselves or flippers or postage/customs if bought direct. As I say I don’t buy many, we are talking 2 or 3 a year tops but when the right release comes up I don’t mind paying a little more for the 45. I don’t see a MoFi or AP as a buying choice for every album that they release that I might want a copy of, only the ones I feel I want a MoFi or AP copy of. The fact that their A&R is stale as fuck also helps limit my purchases and that'd be my main complaint with those two audiophile brands.

There are LOTS of licensing issues for those regular MoFis. Some labels get the rights to ONLY press a 33 and different places get the 45 pressing rights. MoFi doesn't seem to be pressing many 33s which is a shame as you said. I don't think it's entirely a money game because many many people prefer the 33s and refuse to buy the 45s.

These supervinyls were done in small quantities because they were a test to see viability of the product and price point (it's why we got a 1LP and a 2xLP). I think the Bacharach is still available but as you know Dylan sold out in hours (I believe that had less copies though).

I thought I had read that they get 1,000 pressings out of a single One Step lacquer but I can't remember where I saw that and I might be confusing it with SRX. They definitely get less copies per stamper and it's one of many reasons why the One Steps are expensive. You also have the better packaging, different vinyl formula, etc. Plus, it's just marketed as the best of the best, so the snake oil/hype price is built in. The reject rate is likely higher QC-wise as well.

They will have no issues selling these at this price point to a certain demographic especially if numbers are kept to around 2,000-3,000. They already fairly quickly sell out of the One Steps at $125-$135. There are some facebook auction groups and one guy paid $850 for the Santana One Step. Obviously that's not everybody, but the demand is out there for stuff like this and people are willing to pay for it. I do hope that they don't entirely get rid of the regular $35-$45 MoFis but I'd be surprised if they do. I'm guessing most of these Super Vinyls will be long OOP titles from their regular series. You get people who didn't pick up the old MoFis buying them, plus some people who are curious about whether or not its an upgrade.

Ah, you're right, I got confused on the Dylan sellout and the Costello/Bacharach. I take it that the Dylan Sellout at least validates the price point for movers, but I don't know if they would be comfortable pricing less popular titles, like the C/B, lower, since that would be proof of markup. It will be interesting to see what develops. Hoping for some more exciting boring ol 33s though. Otherwise happy that other reissue companies exist.

I think they will still sell the lower priced 33s as long as they can get licensing/find new things to press. I'd be surprised if they stop that altogether.

I spent 10 minutes considering it so I missed out.
Same boat here. I went to the site as soon as the email hit my inbox. Then I didn't really want to spend $75 on it. Now I think the main reason why I don't want it is because I can't have it haha. I'm okay with not getting it. If it pops up again somehow, I'll try to grab one.

Fuck man, really kicking myself for never picking up The Freewheelin Bob Dylan MOFI when it was sitting in my cart a bajillion times. Do we think this will be repressed?

The mono unlikely. The stereo I think was numbered but not with a specified max so maybe. Perhaps there’ll be a limited super vinyl of it like with desire .

Is it the general consensus that the mono is superior?

Actually only $80, found a dude on eBay with the last sealed copy under $100 with a Buy It Now option. It was destiny, phew. Now need to keep my eyes out for MoFi Blues for Allah and Workingmans Dead and I'll be content for now lol.

My god, how desensitized have I become to where I can say "Only $80" for a record lmfaooooooo, fuck.

I gotta grab some of the Stevie MoFis. I can still find decent prices on MoFi every once in awhile. I was able to get a copy of Miles Davis - Someday My Prince Will Come from eBay last week for $40 shipped!

Yah I've been tracking all the Stevie's for a while now. I hope to slowly add them all and/or hopefully mofi redoes them.
