Definitive Audiophile pressings

My only One-Step is the Mingus, and man do I wish I had jumped on that Blood on the Tracks back when it was in stock and "only" $125.
I'm still shocked that Target had it on sale. I have seen some pop up for around $150 with make an offer, so it's possible you could still get one close to MSRP if ya keep your eyes peeled!

Yeah Twist and Shout in Denver actually had one or two copies on Thursday when I was in there. I can’t throw down that kind of money for one record but they were listed for $150 or so. There was a Mingus and Monk one as well. So I think they’re still out there just few and far between, especially online.

I kinda hate that record stores are boosting the price of it...they are new records. Just seems like more and more record stores are flipping inventory instead of charging MSRP. This is why places like MMJ stopped selling to record stores (which I think was wrong but especially since now MMJ essentially flips their own product but still...)

I agree that retail stores shouldn't do this, but MMJ started gouging almost immediately after pulling distribution. To the degree that they still had the explanation posted on their homepage and they went back and deleted that sentence from their explanation because of how embarrassingly hypocritical it was. I guess the only way you can blame retail stores is for putting the idea in their heads.

Oh yea the MMJ thing is a whole other layer of sketchiness. Both suck though. Record stores selling MoFi One Steps at a markup is not all that different from the tons of shops flipping RSD albums on discogs within 24 hours of them publicly going on sale.

On the flip side though I guess how long are you meant to wait to sell things like that when the value is going up. The albums sell out from MoFi somewhat quickly so what's to prevent shops from raising the prices knowing that you can't get it from MoFi anymore? It's all more of an ethics thing I suppose!

I'm also kinda pissed at how many copies I am seeing for sale of the Dylan Desire MoFi supervinyl for $150-200...thats not really at shops though, it's more just on ebay and discogs...

So music direct doesn't charge until they ship you say @MikeH ?
I believe if it is in-stock, they charge pretty much right away (I just ordered On The Corner and charge hasn't hit my account yet but I'm sure it will soon). If it's out of stock or awaiting repress, I do not believe they charge you immediately.

One Steps officially announced via catalogue, which we knew. The funny thing is Blood Sweat and Tears leak was over a year ago in the MD catalogue and it still isn't out, so it may be a minute before we see these next titles...

CSN
Clapton Unplugged
Blood Sweat and Tears self-titled
Muddy Waters - Folk Singer
Paul Simon - Still Crazy After All These Years

Supervinyl news:
David Crosby - If I Could Only Remember My Name will be the next supervinyl Ltd to 4,000 copies.

That title will be available at retail/record stores and not just on MoFi's site.

The other titles in that catalogue pic will all supposedly be regular 33 MoFis (Jeff Beck - Truth, Alan Parsons Project - eye in the Sky, Nilsson - Son of Schmilsson, Young Rascals, Mark Knopfler - Local Hero).

Next week restocks:
Weezer Blue
B52s (two other albums)
Yaz
Dylan - Planet Waves

Oh no someone "leaked" the news by buying a mofi record!

haha it happens every year when the MD catalogue comes out. They "leak" the potential upcoming releases although they don't always actually get pressed. I didn't know that the Crosby is supervinyl and the other non-one steps are 33s though!

I've been somewhat slowly building up my early MoFi pressing collections whenever I find deals on ebay. The 80s japan MoFi pressings are really fantastic. I got Music From Big Pink a few weeks ago and it's on that slightly see-through vinyl formula when you hold it up to the light that's similar to the SRX/supervinyl look. I found a cheap (relatively speaking) MoFi of Ziggy Stardust early on in quarantine and it's one of the best sounding records I own and same thing--80s MoFi japan press.

Going back and looking through the list of stuff MoFi released in the 80s is kind of sad though compared to what they press nowadays! They did so much good stuff that's completely out of reach now price-wise.

Do you enjoy all of them? I haven't heard any, but it seems like most of the guys over at sh.tv do not like the "smiley" eq mastering choices at all. I've never seen a vintage MoFi recommended as a best pressing over there. Or is that smiley eq a shorter period in the middle of their life than I realized and not back to the beginning? The reviews typically seem to have a much higher opinion of the modern ones.

I'm not entirely sure which pressings are the "smiley" EQs and don't have any direct comparisons between modern MoFi and ones from that era, but the Ziggy Stardust MoFi in particular sounds really great to me. It's quiet and the separation and soundstage on it is amazing. I don't have a UK original Ziggy which is highly regarded, but I do have an early US press and the MFSL is way better. As with most things on Hoffman, some people seem to claim that the MFSL is incredible, while other people say its unlistenable. The discogs reviews of it are all pretty great. I'm not sure when the smiley EQ era supposedly stopped and started.

I have the 1979 MFSL of American Beauty which sounds great to me as well and was also on the JVC supervinyl formula. Part of me wishes I had modern copies and older copies of some of the titles on MoFi to do a more direct comparison but at least Ziggy, Music from Big Pink and American Beauty sound great to me. I wouldn't say I am an expert by any means though!
