Definitive Audiophile pressings

I’m an idiot and realized I said Harvest Moon instead of just Harvest, sorry for the confusion!
I jumped on the standard press on Amazon when it dipped under $20. It sounds great. I think any of the Neil Young issues are great ways to go from the reviews I've heard.

Mine is:

I don't know all the specifics as it has been a minute since I looked into it. But I remember reading that when I was debating going for the KG cut vs the AS reissue. I know people who have the KG cut and said it's not as hard-panned as the AS version (still panned but Coltrane and Elvin are more like 80/20 on each channel instead of hard panned.)
Well I'd love to hear what KG and RKS have to say about that, but generally if something is only remastered, that means the source is the 2-track master tape. I'm not sure if the multitracks exist for it anymore and if they did I think someone would be touting a remix loudly. Maybe they can do some voodoo and do a partial fold? Don't think there are two different stereo mixes out there but who knows!

I have a Van Gelder stamped reissue from the late 60’s. The record is definitely panned pretty hard with some bleed between channels. Just how it was recorded and nothing will change that. The Acoustic Sounds series definitely eliminated any bleed between channels though. I personally think the Acoustic Sounds reissue sounds better than the original but I understand why others might not like the instrument placement. I’m sure it sounds wonky on headphones like all hard panned stereo albums though.

Yea this is what I was referring to. There was bleed but the RKS one seems to have taken that out versus the KG cut which left some bleed in. I’ll have to eventually dig out my various older pressings!

how much does acoustic sounds charge for international shipping? I ordered 3 CCR records from them a few years ago but I don't remember if it was expensive... all I recall is that I had to pay the fedex duty LOL. (I'd like to get a few of their The Doors Lps eventually but I haven't been able to find any Canadian sources over the last few months - maybe I'll break down and order direct over the holidays)

I have ordered from them occasionally. Shipping is very expensive, so I only do it when they have 15% or 20% off. For example, this summer, shipping for 8 records were $82USD + customs charge from FedEx. In fall 2019, 6 records were $49US + customs.

That said you get what you pay for: their records are always superb, they pack their stuff really well, and have excellent CS.

I've done it the once as well, a while back, and like I said all I remember is the duty.

More to the point: do you know if any Canadian retailer currently has their The Doors Analogue Productions? In particular LA Woman and S/T, possibly Morrison Hotel too. I've looked at the usual suspects, but I may have missed something.
Record Groove (Canadian) on Discogs has them all for $69 USD, and it looks like they would ship 3 for a flat $15 and then no customs? I don't have an abacus handy, but that might be cheaper? Or maybe not, but less of a headache?

Neil Young did an fantastic job with the his reissue series. One of the recent ORS reissues of it will do you perfectly, I love how mine sounds!

Yea--it's pretty mental. And part of why I like Sam Records so much...he visually inspects every disc before it ships (or maybe at least Fred used to). I've never had an issue and they charge nowhere near $450. I was tempted to get that Byrd record he put out because I know that his attention to detail is awesome...but it was too rich for my blood!

Not disputing the theme of what you are saying, I really hope that I would never pay £300 for a record unless I became very wealthy & could afford a house & a much better hifi (I'm still shocked that I actually spend over £100 the year on a One-Step). But I did get a Sam record that had a major pressing defect, the centre hole had been punched twice so the record didn't sit centred.

I think even with the visual inspection, defects can get easily missed, what matters is how the customer service handles it. I hadn't bought the record direct from Sam Records, but the seller told me to contact Fred directly & he sent a new copy out free of charge with no shipping. Really great customer service from a one man company & I will continue to buy most Sam Records that are released.

I'm not convinced with Analogue Productions CS though. I had a record from them with a severe pop & they best they could do was discount the record a bit, it would have cost me more than the record was worth to get it returned & replaced.

It's really expensive. They use fedex, the most expensive carrier for international shipping. Ask them to use someone else, the more people that do, the more likely they will listen

That's great - I'm going to look that up and do some math to see what I can afford right now. I really appreciate the help!

Wow! I just picked up 2 of those from Music Direct (Miles "On the Corner" and "Jack Johnson") for moderately inflated retail prices, $50 and $60 respectively. They dumped some inventory in these two titles a week or so ago. I think there are still JJ left, and I think it's an underrated album.
How do you like that Jack Johnson album? I’ve had it in my cart for some time now but $60 for a single LP is really steep.

I think the sound on original Columbia issues are great and the MoFi reissues probably aren’t worth the premium to me. When they were selling for $30 or whatever they were a great deal though and I should have picked every single one up. You can probably find clean originals for $25 or so. I’ve had mine for at least ten years though so that may not be true.

The Toad Hall Records guy who does the MoFi minute on youtube said that the Kind Of Blue Mofi Box repress is on the next truck. So if any of you preordered that one hopefully they'll be shipping soon.
Dilemma now, grab this one or wait for the twice as expensive UHQR?
