Definitive Audiophile pressings

this might be a question for @Joe Mac ? i remember skipping it but can't remember why and i ended up getting a copy of the MoFi.

Ive only ever had this on cd. I don’t think that it got a lot of praise when it came out, but might be wrong. @Joe Mac will be able to say.

I’ve been toying with idea of picking up late 79’s and early 80’s Beatles editions. I missed out on the mono box, so I’ll probably go for pre digital stereo pressings.

Edit - I’m not even going to look at the price of the mofi’s

I actually have 3 copies of this album 😬

2014 Mono: My favourite mix of this one. Punchy clear and not whack a job panning obviously because mono
MoFi: Original stereo mix done as beautifully as possible complete with whack a job panning
Giles: Beautiful new mix. Is like a stereo representation of the original mono mix. Ringo and Paul are a little higher up in the mix than ideal but not painfully so. Do not buy the 2LP the odds and sods on LP2 are shit. Some purists hate it because the panning is history, I say "THANK FUCK" lol.

Great tip, think that'll do me until they repress the mono box (if they ever do)

People seem to love/hate the MoFis. I happen to like it a lot.

i'm no beatles expert but i have the escher demos box and like it and haven't felt the need to upgrade. i did get it from an amazon deal for $45 though which i think was a pretty good price. i think it's more of a remix though and not sure how it compares to other recent reissues.

Depends on the artist for the older ones. As much as I've no tempation for a "cleaned up" or "smiley" version of Ziggy I think they did brilliantly with The Beatles, they remind me of the mixes I listened to as a kid. There are limitations with the original stereo mixes which is why I now prefer the monos mostly but mofi did these beautifully.

Three copies of this one too 😳. 50th White is great BUT I again find Paul and Ringo are too high up in the mix. The Esher Sessions Discs, however, they're a revelation. That said the mono also has really prominent bass. My favourite of this one is the MoFi stereo, its absolutely perfect. This is a top 2 all time album for me.

When I bought the mofi in January it was a really fairly priced record considering that its mofi and Beatles. That said mofi went nuts this year so...

on a different topic, I just ordered the 2017 pressing of Purple Rain. I assumed this was using the same mastering as the 2009 KG cut, but looking at cogs it has KG@CA in the Deadwax. Does anyone have this, is it good? Is it a new (ish) mastering?

I just grabbed the KG Purple Rain that was pressed at RTI. I believe mine is the 2009. The reviews are pretty interesting on that discogs entry for the 2017. All over the place. Some people seem to think that the 2017 is a digital cut. The 2009 sounds great though.

Oh my NM of that one was expensive, I was talking peppers lol. I got peppers for €70ish. That one cost me *cough* £150 *cough*
I was able to get a NM of peppers for $85 in the past year so that price seems about right. White album has regularly been $100+ from what I've seen and even more in NM. My local near my last place had 3 copies that were VG+ for $125 or so each.

Oh don't listen to Joe, he's just being cranky. I've got the 2LP and it sounds great. Do you NEED the extras on this one? No not really, as he said the White Album box set extras really are astonishing and these pale in comparison. But it's not bad, just don't pay a fortune for it that's all.

You.... you didn't pay a fortune for it... did you?

Hahaha! No I paid £35 for it and don't feel I've overpaid at all. I'd just always advise anyone now to buy the 1LP as the 2LP seems to have become really rare and I wouldn't overpay for the extra disc, its not worth it, I would just buy the 1LP.

I know YOU didn't pay a fortune for it, I meant @Sonicpharmacist.

I also paid about $50 CAD which seemed about right at the time.

Yeah, I've probably made an error getting the 2017 European Press if it's digital. (But Boom Boom wouldn't let us down).

Prince is a difficult one on cogs, a lot of people really slate any reissue. I got this RSD title that sounds good, a KG cut, and the comments on cogs are talking about it as if it's a gray market fake made from a cd copy, I don't think anyone commenting had listened to it
