Definitive Audiophile pressings

The AP of Waltz for Debby is probably the definitive version, but OJCs are really solid usually and for the prices, hard to beat those 80's ones. The newer pressings are probably digitally sourced, but find one with GH in the runout and those should be AAA. Nobody really seems to be able to pinpoint when the switch from AAA to digital happened with OJCs.
Oh wow, that Analogue Productions pressing on Discogs is so expensive!!! It would be magnificent if Analogue productions repressed that reissue or did a 45RPM reissue of Waltz For Debby!

I really lucked out and grabbed the 1992 AP 33 of Waltz for Debby from Acoustic Sounds' discogs a few months ago. It was $50 shipped. It has a small seam split on the spine but I was fine with it for $50!

I wish I had known more about the OJCs earlier. They have really gone up in price a lot over the past few years. I tend to go for ones that don't have a bar code as those are more likely to be AAA but hard to know unless you have an unsealed one.

The Bill Evans Riverside box set is still on backorder from AS.

I might have to jump on it if it ever comes back into stock.

So what's the general consensus on Original Jazz Classics (OJC) pressings? I've got the OJC pressing of Thelonious Monk's Brilliant Corners and it actually sounds pretty great!

On Acoustic Sounds, there are plenty of OJC pressings of classic jazz albums, such as Sonny Rollins' Way Out West, Miles Davis' Relaxin' With The Miles Davis Quintent, Yusef Lateef's Eastern Sounds, Bill Evans' Sunday At The Village Vanguard and Art Pepper's Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section!

These are all in stock, and are very affordable! They are all OJC pressings! Are these pressings great? Because if so, that's freaking awesome having some classic titles receive quality reissues at a cheap price!

I have quite a few of the original 80’s pressings and they are great. I think the modern OJCs are digital and not pressed as well but there’s definitely exceptions to that. I’ve heard good things about the newer ones as well. They’re a great deal to get good sounding jazz records. There might be a handful of modern audiophile reissues that are better, but the OJCs are mostly fantastic.

Most modern represses of the OJC are digital sources but still can sound pretty good. The 80s versions of them are mostly AAA instead.

Craft owns OJC now.

Awesome, that's good to know the 80's pressings are AAA and that even though the recent OJC pressings are digital, that they still sound pretty good! :)

I'll give it a spin and report back.
Okay, so this is the record I ordered from popmarket (they have four listings to choose from):

And this is the corresponding listing on discogs:

Just listened to Side 1 (just under 20 minutes of music) and it sounds very good. If I'd gone in blind and you'd told me it was a Tone Poet release, I'd accept that without question. Flat, quiet, with a rich, deep sound. Brushed snare drum and wonderful bass lines sound very realistic. What struck me immediately is the in-the-room feeling of the recording. At first I thought I was hearing things, but sure enough, deep in the background was the clink of a glass, a brief cough, and talking voices of the audience. Confirmed this by reading about how it was recorded live, and once you're listening for it there's no denying the audience. Kind of cool because it felt like the way you would hear it if you were there.

I'm sure this isn't the definitive pressing of this album, and I'm not familiar with this record so don't have any basis for comparison. Bottom line is that if this had been a $40 record, I wouldn't be disappointed with SQ.

I have a bunch of the OJC titles (Miles, Bill Evans, Art Blakey, Rollins, et al.) and to my ears, they all sound very good.

Almost all of them were pressed at RTI, so the pressing quality is very good.

Who mastered them for vinyl can be hard to find though, and may require some sleuthing and conjecture. Some are AAA, some were remastered by George Horn, some, like the Bill Evans titles I couldn't find details anywhere and may have an element of digital. That said, most of them were well recorded to begin with. The Miles Quintet Prestige sessions were recorded by Rudy Van Gelder, so they are kind of hard to fuck up.

The jackets are basic, but fine.

Sweet review! Thank you so much for listening and then writing this up straight after! I'm so happy to hear the 2011 OJC pressing sounds great and is an audiophile level pressing! I'm definitely upgrading to this pressing! 😄🕺🎹

Perfect! So happy to know they all sounded very good! Even better knowing they were all pressed at a top pressing plant - RTI!!!

Thank you for reinforcing the fact that the OJC pressings are well-pressed and sound good! I'll definitely pick some of them up!

I have several 80s OJCs and indeed they sound quite good. In terms of overall quality we’re probably talking Wax Time (and other grey market labels you shouldn’t buy from) < BN75 < current OJC < 80s OJC < BN80 < Tone Poet < the other expensive stuff you guys talk about and I can’t afford.

Omg, you just placed the current OJC pressings next to BlueNote75 and I’m traumatised now and am a bit put off! 😅

BlueNote75 was a disaster and I think the quality of the pressings sound quite mediocre and the pressing quality is extremely low…

Hmmm, maybe I’ll just grab a few OJC pressings - (Bill Evans Waltz For Debby as that received a stellar review from a forumer and Sonny Rollins’ Way Out West as I am extremely familiar with that recording)!

I agree with that overall ranking but from BN75 to OJC is a pretty big jump (at least from the newer OJCs I own!) So don’t be too traumatized. I have a newer Way Out West—I’ll try to give it a listen tomorrow and let ya know how it sounds.

Yes please! If you could give it a listen and let me know how it sounds, that would be great! I'm actually researching via Steve Hoffman forums + Discogs and nearly everything I'm reading is very positive! These particular titles have very strong reviews and are outstanding albums, so I have them in my cart for Acoustic Sounds:

Bill Evans Trio - Waltz For Debby
Sonny Rollins - Way Out West
Art Pepper - Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section
Yusef Lateef - Eastern Sounds
John Coltrane - Coltrane
Bill Evans Trio - Sunday At The Vanguard Village
Coleman Hawkins - At Ease With Coleman Hawkins

I've already got both Bill Evans, the Sonny Rollins and Yusef Lateef records, but I want upgrade and most of them unfortunately ruined by cleaning them incorrectly!

At Ease With Coleman Hawkins is a beautifully romantic and moody album, so I have to get that one and I really enjoy Coltrane after briefly listening to it! Thanks for the recommendation on that one @Mather !

But yes, it seems like there is a humungous difference in sound quality as well as pressing quality between BN75 and the current OJC pressings! I'm very excited!!!

The Yusef Lateef sounds great as does the Art Pepper! Just got Art Pepper in the mail 20 mins ago and have the OJC VMP Eastern Sounds

Thank you for updating me on those two! I also had the VMP Eastern Sounds but destroyed my copy accidentally due to cleaning it really poorly/not drying it after spin cleaning it! I remember it did sound great though!

Sweet knowing you just got the Art Pepper and that it sounds great!

Does anyone know any coupon codes for Acoustic Sounds? I recently got a lot of Analogue Production titles, but because my current cart has mostly OJC and Blue Note Classics Series pressings, they are all eligible for discounts! If anyone has any coupon codes, I'd love to know as I would at least save quite a bit which relives the international shipping costs! :)
