Discogs - Help, Tricks, Secrets And Tips

So...I’m listing things to sell recently on here for my first time...is it common for people to “buy” but not pay the invoice for a day or 2? As a seller, should I reach out if people haven’t paid the invoice?

I sold one and the buyer paid immediately, like I usually do, but is it common for people to not pay like this ?

Yes. It is not uncommon at all. I'd wait probably 4 days before nudging someone.

ugh. Transcription records have ruined Disgogs. From all the forum threads to how they appear all through a bands/artists discography.

I'm not saying I'll never get one if it is a band I like, but they need to be moved to miscellaneous.
I probably won't enter the one I have, most likely just sell it at a flea market / record fair.

Yeah definitely happens sometimes. I usually give it a couple days and then send a quick message saying something like "Thanks for the order, the invoice has been sent, I'll follow up with tracking info once I receive payment." A few times it ended up they just forgot, or accidentally thought they had sent payment at time of purchase. Especially if it looks like they are a new-ish buyer, they may just not be familiar with the process. Bottom line...I don't think it hurts to follow up after a few days in a very polite way.

Be sure to set your auto cancel for the minimum of four days. I reach out after two days and ask if they are still interested and that usually does it.

Its a real pain in the ass though when you have only one copy and someone is holding up your inventory. I would switch to two days auto cancel if I could.

I am OK with 4 days auto-cancel. Sometimes a buyer wants your record, but maybe they get paid in 2-3 days. As long as they pay.

I had set up my store to charge $3/record when someone buys something. I messed up because one person bought 6 records from me at once and I didn't put up a variable rate where 2 or more records is $3 with each additional record etc. So they were charged only $3 for shipping. I thought about asking if they wouldn't mind paying for the extra shipping. I'd still do media mail but it'd be like $8. However, that's my mistake, their advantage so I didn't ask. I never expected that someone would clean me out like that.

I have auto-cancel on after 4 days (I remind them 2-3 times over the course of the 4 days) and in 7 years have had 22 non-paying buyers and 19 orders cancelled per buyer's request (mistake, can't pay anymore, didn't think I'd accept the offer, etc). Soo, yeah. More common than you think unfortunately.

And Invoices are sent out at time of purchase now so there’s no reason not to pay. Any other online retailer wouldn’t much like that business model if I withheld payment and kept the item in limbo.

I don't disagree; eBay allows it, too. Maybe because Discogs isn't the seller, they're the portal.

True. And I've had issues with eBay as well. Their interface is pretty poor given how big they are.

Though I have a bit more sympathy for items won via bidding. Since technically you may not be right at your computer when you win.

For those that can vote to merge....some yes votes, please.

I saw the other sub when I finished making mine, but it is pretty bad and easier to merge than fix that one.

Question: Why does this entry have no country? Usually I see multiple, not an empty spot.

It was the RSD release, so being worldwide we leave it blank.

Really it comes down to Discogs not having enough "countries" to include all of them.

They really just need a Worldwide option, as a lot of users don't seem to know this. I don't think it's in the guidelines, but I haven't looked in a while.

One advantage to this flawed system is that when you make offers on 2+ items from one seller, you can wait until all the offers are (hopefully) accepted, then ask the seller to merge the invoices together, to save on shipping.

Of course, if cogs would allow you to place a single offer for multiple items, you could theoretically pay immediately upon acceptance.
