Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

now unrelated to cartridges.. dunno if i will go with a magni heresy or a magni 3+.. both are aparently great but i dunno what sound system id want with it, plus i might do something else like a liquid spark but then my mani might not stack on top and i'd need a new preamp

In my system, the Bronze was bright as all get out. I think it doubled as an ultrasonic insect repellent.

(Ok that was indeed harsh- kinda like the Bronze). ;)

I mean, I fully believe that it's not a match for every system, but I found it detailed and very likable in my chain, if a bit analytical. Certainly not 'horrid.' And a champion tracker.

That said, in this hobby, one must resign oneself to the fact that for every audio component you love, there's bound to be someone out there who just can't stand it. Zu and Klipsch owners know this feeling well.

I love ya anyway, @HiFi Guy.

I ran mine with powered speakers for a year with zero noise. Huh?
Maybe it was specifically the AudioEngine speakers. I just recall when I bought my Utrun and was looking at speakers, I looked into the AudioEngine powered speakers and kept finding post after post about humming/buzzing. Maybe things have changed in four years but it definitely steered me away from active speakers in my setup.

Glad to see you are well.

I know @AnthonyI is eyeing a low output Opus3. @Yer Ol' Uncle D got his Gold3 set up and loves it. I upgraded phono stages (Sutherland Duo) and am thinking a low output Sonata3 or maybe a Master3 once funds recover a bit. I’ll say that the Gold3 is even better than I initially thought.

I'm glad you're enjoying the Gold3, we felt the v3 was a nice upgrade to the v2.

I got the rest of my equipment in, now I just need cables so I can hook it all up, this lockdown can make things a pain. I added a bunch of Schiit to this system, an Aegir Class A amp, a Freya+ tube preamp and a Bifrost2 DAC, for speakers I am trying a pair of Q Acoustic 3050's I've had for a while but never hooked up. Can't wait to get this all hooked up and see how it sounds. I have this setup in my office in a way that I can easily swap pieces in and out and see what I like.

On the link you sent...at the bottom... there is an article. The mofi studio that is on there is 300$ and will be the one recommended here along with the Pho 8.

The MoFi phono stages don’t do well with cartridges that have > 4mV output. @Ghost (unless he’s changed it) has an Ortofon 2m Blue. Those are hot as far as output. Ortofon says 5mV but they are really more like 7mV.

I’d go with the Musical Fidelity that @Chucktshoes recommended or a Vincent PHO-8.

That's good to know. I've been tempted to try one.

Thank you all for the equipment recommendations! Going to pull the trigger on the Musical Fidelity option, feeling really good about it!

Noob question: Do preamps typically ship with the cables and ground wire included, specifically the Musical Fidelity one?
