Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

good point. so do you think it's not worth getting? also when using a weight would I need to adjust anything on the tonearm/anti-skate?
FWIW I use the Uturn weight with my setup. Did I notice a difference? Probably not, but there were some minor improvements.

I don't have any adjustments on the Orbit, but my gut tells me you wouldn't need to adjust anti-skate.

Well all you Denton and Linton heads will be happy to know that although I can't afford to go with either of those I'm likely going to go with a Mission LX3 MKII which is designed by... Peter Comeau. The same designer who did the Denton and Lintons. He currently also works with Mission. Not the same quality of speaker as either of those but it should do the trick and fits into the budget in a way that allows me to also get my dad Blue Jeans Canare speaker cables and RCAs to nicely round the whole thing out. And of course a couple of SACDs to give him a taste of the good stuff.

Anyone have any suggestions of good SACDs? Was thinking Mofi Best of Withers and maybe Joplin or Dylan.
I just found a video someone did of them hooking the Missions LX3 MKII's up to a frankly bonkers looking system from what I can make out... So obviously this is a little colored due to the fact that these are gunna be run through a NAD BEE 316 and NOT a $100,000 system of amps on amps on amps on amps. But despite this coming through my phone I'm pretty impressed with the sound these appear to be putting out (assuming it's not actually the Sonos Faber Olympicas (or whatever they are) in the back that are playing)

Cool man! Can you report back once he's got them set up with how they sound?

You are a good son.

Not sure what amp they are using but If there using the little Audiolab on the left thats about a 1K integrated, not a bad judge/comparison. There is also a video from the same user showing a vocal track from Janis Ian on these and they sound nice, seem to image well, not sure about the low end though if Dad likes to rock (you can always get him a good cheap sub). The soft dome tweeter should be smooth sounding and not overly bright. It seems typical to most good sounding bookshelves I have heard.

Very true, nothing better that in person. But I do feel you can get a rough "general idea" of how it's voiced/performs and during a pandemic and spike now that helps.
I suppose it can at least give you a relative sense, if they are auditioned in the same space with the same recording equipment. But there are just so many variables!

I mean I'm not auditioning them, I've read reviews and looked at the specs and considered the designer and looked at the options in my price range and decided they worked best for what my dad got going on amp and room wise.. Then I found the video after and thought "Hey that's fun.". They aren't available in store so I couldn't even audition them if I wanted to.

I will for sure, unfortunately it'll be a long time before I'm actually able to hear his system in person. But I'll report back what he reports back haha.

And yeah if I can, a small sub would be ideal but there's not a lot of space where this system is going so I'm not certain there's anywhere to put one. But that's the first addition suggestion that I'll make. Maybe for his birthday.

Ed really liked the twos, and you're getting the threes, which I'm guessing have a larger woofer. I've a feeling he's going to be blown away. Nicely done, sir.

Thanks man, I hope so. And yes basically these are identical to the twos but with a 6.5 inch woofer instead of 5. Sightly larger cabinet, otherwise pretty much the same I believe.

The Dylan SACDs that Columbia did back in the early 2000s are excellent, as are the early stones ones that ABKCO did at a similar time, I had a lot of them back then. The Japanese Who and Elton John ones from the last decade were really good to my ears too. I really liked the AP Meat Loaf Bat of Hell One, but I get not everyone likes him, the Norah Jones ones by them are brilliant too and their SACD equivalents of the John Lee Hooker and Pet Sounds (which has both mono and stereo mixes) had good write ups too. But Japan is where it’s at for buying SACDs outside the two audiophile labels, they’re still producing a good amount of new ones.
Where are you guys buying from Japan on the SACD's?
