Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

The Goldring E3 is interesting because its a low risk pick at the 120€ its going to cost vs. the 300 of the Opus 3.
I have a Goldring E3 and really like it. Easy set up, great sound. Also, if you don't have to pay VAT for a purchase from the UK,, then Juno Records has great pricing on the E3, and if you click for a better price they'll send you a code for an additional 10% off.

Yeah they should knock off the VAT for sales into the EU since brexshit. The fact we have to then pay local VAT plus “handling fees” now instead is a bit of a bastard!

Final dad audiophile stereo update. The last part of his gift was the Kind Of Blue Mofi SACD. It's one of his favorite albums. He's spinning it right now and just sent me this:

"Miles has arrived. The presence is so real I'm afraid I may have to score some blow just to keep him happy."

So, if you've ever looked at my posts and thought: "What the fuck is wrong with that guy? Where did he come from?"
There's your answer.
Smart of you to post this. If your dad gets busted buying blow, here’s his defense. Just get the jury to go listen to the SACD and there’s his not guilty verdict. 😎

At that price point the 1200G should always be on the list, it's a workhorse, that replaceable head shell is a big bonus. I think form and function hit a crossroad with the DJ style tables. If I had to choose one, I think I would be hard pressed to pass on a more "stylish" design over the head shell. The Funk Firm is a really nice, "simple", clean, eye catching design for sure ;)
The Thorens TD-1601 looks good too.

Me, I’d be going Technics 1210G.

A sucker for the contrary, at about $4k I’d be scouting for a gently used Luxman PD-171A. I loved this quote in Tone Publications:

“This is no ordinary record player. Much as I like the new $4,000 Technics SL-1200G, the difference in aesthetic and fine machining quality is like parking a Kia next to a Porsche GT3.”

Yikes! I'm looking at $2300 plus tax for the BP2 MM and PS3 power supply and $3050 plus tax for BP2 MM / MC and PS3...not gonna happen 😆
I was just able to score a Bryston BP-1.5 for a lower cost than expected. I’ve been curious about how a Bryston separate would perform in my main rig as I love the phono in my Bryston integrated.

Arrives tomorrow so by the end of February I should be able to report if I’m still keeping my membership in the Sutherland Club, or not! Realistically, it’s more likely in my twisted world view that I’d decide that I needed both for some invented reason.

I love the look of the classic but I honestly can't find it for sale anywhere up here. Was it discontinued?
Here is what my VPI dealer said:

"The Classic is no longer in production. They’ve moved to the Prime series: Scout 21, Prime 21 and Signature 21.

I’ve heard rumblings about hem possibly re-introducing the Classic or a new model like the Classic, but, that was pre-pandemic. So, not sure if it’s something on the books or if it’s been scrapped."

When you get into the $4k territory, all of the turntables are good. It just comes down to personal preference.

From Tone Audio:

“The Technics SL-1200G is like the new generation Miata. It offers up such a balanced amount of analog performance, that you’ll never notice you aren’t listening to a $30,000 turntable.”

I had a Luxman phono stage for a short while some years back. I absolutely hated it. My experience was such that I’d never buy another Luxman piece. Lots of people like and aspire to Luxman gear though- but I’m not that guy.

I’m trying to build my forever system, so I won’t have much gear for sale at all. But just so everyone knows, good gear is advertised here. Other stuff went to eBay.

Did you ever manage to get hold of a 1200G or are they still like hens teeth your side of the pond.

My amp switch is on the fritz. Guess it's time to open the thing up and get at it with some Deoxit.

I really wish there were a more premium solution for my two-amplifier problem.

Anybody has any experience with these pretty wood case QUAD Vena II amps?

The word is that it and the leak stereo 130 are effectively same amplifier with the only differences being slight fine tuning to suit a house sound.

Ed reviewed it a little while back.
