Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

Very satisfied with mine. What cart are you looking at? I have the Maestro V2, which was part of the package I purchased. (Dust cover was an add-on :()

I just really love the entire look of that table, I think the supplied carts are probably a lateral move from my 2M Black, I'm just trying to sort out if the table is going to provide a noticeable upgrade over my Pro Ject 2Xperience. I suspect it will, that tonearm looks real nice and it's undoubtedly a better TT. But I'm just not sure if it's enough of a jump to make the move.

Can you audition? In store or at home ideally...

What cart are you running?
If they are running Clearaudio cartridges, remember that A/T is the OEM manufacturer.

This means:

You can get an A/T MM with a user replaceable stylus- something CA lacks in their models.

And you can either get a similar cartridge (MM or MC) for less money by going A/T or a step up cartridge for the same money as a CA. Their cartridges aren’t great values. You can save some money (or get better for the same money) by going to the source.

This is true. But the stylus of CA carts are also replaceable, even if it’s not advertised. I actually bought a Virtuoso with a broken stylus and plan to replace it with an AT microline one. This apparently improves it quite a lot.

Yeah, I’ve seen how this works. Not exactly plug and play. I wouldn’t be comfortable trying it without someone experienced showing me in person.

Question about two poss sub hook up configs and if they are sound-quality-wise equal, more or less...

#1 Two sub cables from an integrated amp pre out L/R's into the L/R inputs on a powered sub.

#2 A 2-male/1-female Y-adapter into the IA's pre out L/R and then one sub cable from the y-adapter to the LFE input of the powered sub.

Is one better than the other? Obvious upside, to me, of #2 is the cleaner set-up of one cable v. two (but, really, it's not THAT big of diff). However, is one better sound-wise? Either way, the signal is being summed - at y-adapter or by the sub.

what would be a good starting speaker for someone trying to get into them.. obviously prefer a powered speaker because i don't have a speaker amp but i don't need all the extras some basics have like a phono preamp

If you haven’t already bought a sub I’ve been absolutely blown away by the REL subs that take a high level connection. The basically connect the the output taps of your amp alongside your speakers, they sound so musical, rather than boomy, as a result.

I got the little TZero MkIII and it feels like a steal for what it cost!

I've had a could sets of these and am really impressed with how they sound. I would definitely buy them again.

Oh thanks but I've been using the same SVS sub for the last few years w no complaints. Subs are the least likely part of my set up to mess with - right or wrong.

I am going to check those out though for future cash holes. How do you share speaker outputs? Adapter?

Ah right! Yeah SVS are decent subs alright, I didn’t realise you already had one lol.

Different connecters. I bought a 3m aftermarket cable with spade connectors for the sub and then my normal speaker cable uses banana plugs. Let’s them both share the same tap.

To answer your first question I would say it should be for all intents and purposes equal but I'd likely try both and see if I heard/felt a clear differentiator that I preferred.

I have my SVS sub wired with 2 RCA. Let me know if you think Y sounds better. I just assumed the dual cable would be better for whatever reason.

So I thought I was pretty set on getting the KEF Q350s, but just came across a gorgeous used pair of Bowers & Wilkins CM5 S2 that I could probably swing if I hold off on buying an amp for a few weeks till I sell a few more records. Any thoughts or advice?

I have a question that I hope someone can help with! I recently started noticing inner groove distortion on some records. Around 3 or 4. These are all new records purchased and played first by me. I have been using a ATVM95ML, and had not noticed any inner groove distortion prior, on any of my records.

Now, I am sitting at approximately 6-700 hours on my stylus. Am I paranoid thinking it is time to change it out? Also, do y’all think I may have damaged my records due to mistracking from a worn stylus? Every thread I can find online says once you hear issues, its too late. The issues are not extreme, its just high frequencies are fuzzy on the last track, and has not happened to all of my records, just a few. A Night At The Opera and Maggot Brain are the two I can distinctly recall the distortion.

Have you double checked your alignment? As the suspension settles, it can slightly change. I recommend rechecking alignment after 50 hours.

You shouldn’t be getting IGD at 6-700 hours, assuming very clean records.

It's not paranoid. Nagaoka recommends that their styli get changed at 500 hours, so it's not out of the range to suggest at 600-700 hours that you may need to swap styli. You probably are not at the point of record damage yet, though.

I'd agree that checking the alignment is your first and best step. You should be able to get up to 1000 hours if your records are very clean, in theory, but what you actually hear can be your best guide. The US $150 for a new stylus might buy you peace of mind if the IGD persists after alignment.
