Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

I think they’re expensive and not the prettiest. There are more bespoke companies (like butcher block acoustics) that will do nicer looking things for less money.

Can be worth doing an online hunt for isolation platforms.
I like the look of butcher block acoustics but the price is either same or more depending on options. I think the look is good enough to warrant using them over isoacosutics, though.

Yeah fair enough. I forgot to take into account that the ZaZen I was looking at was at a local store and the butchers block one obviously being sold directly from the states. That 23% VAT does make a difference!

A different friend is trying to upgrade his system from vintage/barely works to something new/better.

His budget is $650 +/- a little. He's thinking this

Receiver

Or

Speakers

Turn table

I told him I would go with a fluance rt-83 but that's because auto stop is important for me.

Anyone have thoughts/opinions?

Bump for the evening crowd

I like the butcher block acoustics block I got. Think they have sales fairly often.

Saw someone put these under a cutting board under a TT:

Amazon product ASIN B003SPUIAG
These are also real cheap to put under devices:

who has the uturn orbit theory here? any initial impressions? any other tables at the $1,000 price point that are good competitors or more recommended? got a buddy looking to buy a 2nd table at around 1k or under. ideally can change speed with a button instead of needing to remove a platter to get at the belt. even the MoFi belt might be an annoyance to him although i've said that one has never slipped off on me when changing speeds.

SL-1500C would be a great option in the $1K budget

Thanks! Yea I have mentioned that one to him. Studiodeck is also on his radar. I think if he went Technics he would potentially save up and go for the GR.

He specifically asked about the Theory and I remember somebody here having one but couldn’t remember who! Was it @kvetcha ?

@folsom_lives has one. If they ever release a 230V/60Hz I’d be curious.

I wonder if anyone has used the GR2 yet and if there is an improvement with the upgraded power supply and motor control software.

Supposedly versions of both are going to be rolled out across the line incrementally but they started with the GR.

@MikeH I think I'm one of the only people around here with a Theory. Maybe @dansomeone too?

While I'd argue it doesn't have the heft and some of the capabilities of the Technics or the StudioDeck. It fit my needs perfectly in terms of looks, ease of use, customer support, quality and price point.
I replaced a StudioDeck with a Theory. @folsom_lives summed up the Theory very well. It's well made and easy to use and it looks great in walnut. And sound wise I enjoy it as much as the StudioDeck.

I think @folsom_lives nailed it with "heft" - having had my ears on several Orbits (not Theories), as well as the SD and the recent 1200's, I'd expect the Theory to be extremely lively, have that bounce, while the MoFi and Technics will have a stouter delivery. One day I'll get my ears on that magnesium arm! Super cool.

Re: GR2, if they can just fix that damn arm lift, that's a huge improvement right there!!

If he wants a GR, he might want to jump quickly. It’s been discontinued and the new GR2 is around $500 more.
