Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

Does he have a clue about the price tag there? I’m sure that shit sounds unreal, like Elton playing in the room with you on Steinway in a perfect acoustic room…. With a choir of angels and what not…
Actually, it sounds quite real but it should for the price. Speakers - $150k, Transrotor ’table w/ Reed arm and Air Tight cartridge north of $60k, Soulution 727 preamp w/ phono module $90k, VAC amps $75k, very expensive Tara Labs wiring loom ???k. Lots of other gear pictured is of the same price strata. Carl, of Apex Audio of Denver sells mostly to 1 percenters, obviously.

Question…. Those two systems and some of them around here have the turntables at like knee height…. Is there a benefit to this? I fucking love having my turntable at chest height. My knees hate the bottom shelves and those/youse guys are like living there. (Also, is this why so many of you hate 45 pressings… lol)
If your equipment sits between your speakers, a chest high equipment rack can have a negative impact on soundstage and imaging.

i believe Paul from PS Audio discussed this on his YouTube channel a couple times.

In my mind, the further your speakers sit from a tall rack, the less it should matter.

But seriously we all live in practical spaces and for all sorts of reasons the gear between the speakers makes so much sense.

I really struggle with that nth degree of marginal gains with this hobby. It tends to be where the most crazy money is spent, or the biggest levels of insane beard scratching pondering and fiddling happens, for the smallest possible gains.

That said as @SnowmaNick appears to stand around a foot taller than me there are other practical reasons that im not going to have a stand that’s at his chest height 😂

Well my book shelf speakers are at the ceiling. So I’m guessing that part equals out. If I ever get floor standers, the gear will be off to the side from the speakers. So I’m guessing I’m set.

Cause it’d be in the ceiling of your Baggins’ home? 😝

Absolutely. Everyone has the reality of where they are. Be it bad back/knees that makes knee height gear difficult, financial limitations, aesthetic limitations, frankly not caring that much. I get it.

People always ask me if things are "worth it" and I generally respond with a care analogy to remind people of different hobbies. Everyone seems to understand the desire to own a super car, or even a rolex. But very few tend to understand many other hobbies of high expense.

Personally, I'd build an extension to my house with a purpose build dedicated music room with a super system long before I'd look into the a McLaren. Honestly I'd probably buy 10 vacation homes with dedicated hifi systems before I looked at any super car.

But instead I'm just a normal guy with an extra bedroom that I'm able to dedicate to the stereo because we don't have kids :)

I’d actually say very few people genuinely understand or empathise with the high cost end of any hobbies. They may desire those things but the reality means they are fantasies. They have normal house and cars and stereos and make the best out of those things. What the best of that is will vary but extreme positioning of equipment and speakers and room treatments is very much along the lines of engine chipping and mapping, it’s a small number of super enthusiasts doing it lol.

I’d say audio is different. The majority of people are okay with a smart speaker. Stereo system be damned. I’d say people that even have a system these days are closer to the bit doing crazy things to their cars.

Aren’t most people happy with a lump that gets them A to B and something that tells the time and looks nice too? Enthusiasts and hobbyist are always the minority of a subset and the high end and tinkerers are always minority of the minority.

A nice watch can get handed down to their kids/grand kids. Parts of a stereo can too. A really nice car, maybe. But most likely the car would get traded in, the house sold, the stereo donated or given away, but people will keep the watch or jewelry from their parents. It doesn’t take much space, serves a function, and doesn’t ask for much in return.

Given a choice, buying a nice watch makes a bit more sense. After that first watch though, buy a damn stereo.

Just showed this to my gf to show, you know, how reasonable my set-up is. Her only comment: "He must live alone".

Right on @SnowmaNick. I still wear the watch my folks gave me as a high school graduation present in 1968. 😳
