Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

Call me nuts.😬
I just put a $250 deposit down on this 2 track Pioneer.
The guy is out of Nashville and bringing it to my house next Friday to setup and demo.

However picking the right machine is key. It gets costly buying the wrong one.
There's a video of a guy on his 3rd or 4th machine because he jumped too quick 😬
you gonna start making videos now too? haha

I hope not haha

I've read more and consulted with some tape heads.
I think this is the one but only one way to find out.😳
if you do get it, check out these guys:

not that affordable...but much cheaper than the AS ones.

Yeah their title selection is not AS level either.
I just need a few friends to bring by their most awesome records and let me record a few.

yea--not big names/titles. I've heard the Makaya McCraven one they did though and it's unreal.

I don't really understand the purpose of needledropping a record to a reel...? chad's going from tape to tape so I get the reason for wanting to listen that way...but are you somehow getting more information out of the record to justify the price and inconvenience of a reel to reel?

The sound is most likely different but I don't expect to get more out of the vinyl if the vinyl setup is already fairly hi end.

It's all new frontier. Tape saturation, dynamics, etc.. lots of things to learn.

I have an old Realistic reel to reel in the garage that I have yet to part with. In the early 1980’s, my dad would do “needledrops” of LPs onto tape that would allow for longer playing times and prevent wear on the records. Today, I can’t see the value in doing that. If he were alive today, he’d likely be into streaming.

I had a coworker who talked about putting records on reel to reel back in the seventies. I guess it was a thing.

I used to do needle drops to cassette but that was to listen to stuff in the car and on my tape player upstairs instead of my parent’s stereo. I also checked out records from the library and if they were worth listening to would do the same.

Are you referring to these?

They don't say but I think most of those are 4 track 3.75ips.
Based on my understanding, the SQ is not that great.
Ah, yes, I was just shocked to see that they had some! They got a huge collection of "audiophile" stuff recently. I did splurge on a couple Simon and Garfunkel CDs, just to try them out.

not strictly equipment-centric, but I found my old Lava Lamp from high school. The water in the globe had evaporated somewhat, so I've ordered materials to clean and refurbish the thing. gotta figure out a place to put it...
You inspired me to fish my SO’s lava lamp out of the basement. I think she’s had it since High School so it’s at least 25 years old at this point. Still works well.

They're probably from the same era!

Half of my refurbishment kit just got here today. I guess the rest will arrive next week, then I can pop the top, clean the thing out and add new wax and water.

I found this site which seems like a good resource…
