I’m probably about half way though (maybe further) into Luigi’s Mansion 3 and I must say I’m a bit underwhelmed.

Fortunately I didn’t spend any money on it (I checked it out from my local library two days before it was announced that they would be closed through mid-April because of the pandemic).

The game looks beautiful, but it’s starting to feel a bit repetitive and the controls are flawed. It would be ok as a $20-$30 indie title, but not as a $50-$60 console flagship game. I’ll probably finish it within the next couple of weeks but it’s unlikely I’ll ever play it again.

yeah, I didn't like it anywhere as much as the reviews and general word if mouth seemed to like it. it's certainly not a bad game but for me I couldn't figure out all the high praise it almost universally received.

My friend code is SW-0542-2964-3122

I think I have sent friend requests to every code I've seen here.

Liking AC so far! I made the mistake of thinking it would add "Island" after the name so I named the island "Gilligan's". They....do not add island.
I started it last night. naming the island was too stressful for such a relaxing game.

I will share my friend code when I have some time to get to my Switch after the kids are sleeping. (unless I can find it from logging into my account from my phone)

I think at first I felt a little underwhelmed too, but it ended up really winning me over especially as a two player game. It was the first one my girlfriend and I got for the switch and we had a lot of fun playing through it back in December. It was a nice time.

but I get the disappointment too

Beat Undertale and Oxenfree in the past couple days. Which got me thinking:

Indie games worth playing during quarantine:

1) Stardew Valley (The best farming game ever made)
2) Inside (horror, puzzle, platformer)
3) Dead Cells (2d metroidvania with addictive gameplay)
4) A Night in the Woods (2d story driven adventure)
5) Gone Home: (adventure, mystery)
6) Oxenfree (2d story driven adventure)
7) Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice (Horror, Puzzle)
8) Undertale (hilarious JRPG in the vein of Earthbound)

All of these can be snagged for 20 bucks or less.

Also,

A) How are people liking Animal Crossing? I saw it's getting hammered on Metacritic by users but not sure if that's for a stupid reason or not
B) I got Nintendo online last night. My friend code is 8131-6988-1114

ugh, i've been meaning to play Night in the woods for the longest!!!!!!! unfortunately, i have this weird habit of only being able to play one (up to two at most) game(s) at a time, but hopefully i'll play night in the woods relatively soon

So the original Mirrors Edge is one of my favorite games of all time. I’ve beaten it as recently as a couple years ago (and it was even better than I had remembered on that run through).

I finally booted up Catalyst after buying it for almost nothing and then spending a year afraid to touch it (due to the middling reviews). Has anybody here played it?

Holy shit the controls are frustrating. As a veteran of the original, you’d think I’d be able to hit the ground running— but there is just something off about the timing of the game. Especially the wall runs. Like the original was a touch clunky but once you had it down- it was fucking exhilarating and unlike any other game.... Here you fuck up and then get stuck on a stupid long load screen.

UPDATE: I’ve adjusted. Moving swiftly for the most part. Not sure the (very empty) open world was necessary, nor how quickly I will tire of traversing it, but the main missions are a ton of fun so far (even if the load screens are still obnoxious).

I enjoy Animal Crossing, the reason it's getting hammered is because of local multiplayer. You're allowed one Island per switch, The person who starts the Island is the real "Main Player" They get to do all the building projects and decide where everything goes. Any of the other 3 people who can live on your Island (if you're using the same Switch like my wife and I) can still customize their house, donate to the museum, do lots of stuff, just not directly contribute to the building projects. I handed stuff off to my Wife to help out, but I don't get the same prompts she does. It's a little lame... but I'm a casual player and I only get to play when my wife isn't... which isn't often.

I liked, but didn't love Oxenfree, but A Night in the Woods is a masterpiece. Stardew is also fantastic.

Animal Crossing is absolutely wonderful, but if you're wanting to play with multiple people/profiles on the same Switch you have to go in knowing the limitations.

I started Children of the Zodiarcs the other day and so far I like it a lot. It does have a lot of mechanics going on at once though. It's an SRPG and each character has their card deck and dice set for battles. I can see it getting bloated by the mid/end game but so far it's a lot of fun.

I just wanna check back in and say that Mirrors Edge 2 is actually some of the most pure fun I’ve had gaming this gen.

Is it flawed? Definitely. The story is stupid af (but the same was true of the first one), the open world is empty and not as interconnected as one would like and I, personally, miss being able to wipe out enemies with a gun instead of being forced to utilize hand to hand combat over and over again. Also... the load screens are too long and the skill tree was a bad decision (though you can level up your movements pretty quickly).

Same time? The platforming mechanics are soooo good once your adjust to them. It shifts between high speed and meditative on a whim. There’s a heft to every motion and sense of satisfaction to every chained decision.

The main missions (this far) are octane fueled and well designed. Meanwhile the open world is a ton of fun to explore (despite it’s emptiness) specifically because the platforming takes skill and thought. I’m finding it way more tempting than in most games (regardless of genre) to chase after an orb that I see floating or a billboard that needs hacking because it triggers the question of “how do I get up there?”.

Same thing goes for delivery based side missions. In most games they are a chore, but in this game the combination of the time limit and the non-linear path (as well as variances like “don’t be seen by the law” or “fragile packages” that require minimizing the impact of your falls) make getting from point A to point B fun. The soundtrack is also solid (though not quite as good as the first) and the graphics are pleasant.

In sum, in spite of its flaws, there is still nothing else like the Mirrors Edge universe. If you dug the original or like 3D platformers, you should check this one out.

SO! I need y'all's help.

I don't know much about the new video game systems, still rocking a Gameboy Advance SP.
Found somebody who is willing to sell me Switch for $160, it has the black controllers, not the colorful ones. It also doesn't come with the docking station to connect to the tv.
To me,$160 seems like a good deal since it comes with Zelda Breath of the Wind and Mario Kart 8. I would need to get a docking station...

BUT, I don't know if this is an older model or if it will support new and future games...

What do y'all think?

When you say comes with BotW and Mario Kart, do you mean cartridges? If they are digital, then they will still be associated with the original owner's account and be unusable to you if they remove their account from the system.

I don't think you'll have any compatibility issues with games. The only real difference between the old/new models is slightly upgraded performance/battery capability, but we have the old and it works just fine for our purposes.

$160 is a pretty darn good deal if it does include 2 flagship games. You can get a used docking station for $30 on ebay or $24 on Toy Wiz (according to Google Shopping) it seems, which would still put you under the cost of a Switch Lite without games (which does have certain limitations compared to even the older Switch model).
