Everything Video Games!

My kid (I mean, 27 but still) has been playing the new one all weekend on her PS5. She got me hooked on Rise on the switch, so I'm working my way through that.
Rise was really good at streamlining the gameplay a lot, the handheld team (the ones who made Rise) are putting out better MonHun games than the console team, IMO.

As someone who never got into open world games, I appreciate the separate smaller maps and more linear progression.

I picked up Rise w/ all the DLC on the last sale for under $20 on the switch. Looks like its back to full price now.

Yeah it used to be REALLY segmented (loading screens between each map zone and you had to *tag* the monster to know where it is). World opened that up a bit and Rise smoothed out a lot of the wrinkles. Wilds dips its toes into open world (more open world in a very constrained area, like the Yakuza games) and it feels like a first attempt in that respect. I bet the eventual expansion (there's always a spinoff game) will be better in this regard. I think waiting for a Wilds price drop would also mean you probably get the best performing and most content-rich version of the game.

I am big on RPGs so your comment made me go back and now I want a PlayStation... Damn. That looks great.
yeah like graphically it feels like this is an actual showcase of that PS5 hardware and we are finally getting past that phase of "ok we are mostly just making PS4 games with a little resolution uptick"

plus PS5 has a good amount of solid RPGs to it, specifically metaphor refantazio, unicorn overlord (also on switch), FFXVI, etc

Bruh, the list of games that I need to play is getting too big.

I only just started Super Mario Wonder around Christmas, but need to finish that. I also have TLOZ: Skyward Sword that I haven't even taken out of the case yet. I bought Kingdom Come 2: Deliverance last week, played for about 2 hours and put that on a hold for a bit because I've been working my way through Avowed on Gamepass which is really fun and addicting. That Clair Obscur game posted earlier looks good. I installed the new Indiana Jones game on Gamepass but the file size is huge and needed more space so I deleted it. Not to mention I still need to get around to Remanant 2, Lies of P, Sekiro that I have downloaded on my Xbox.

I need more hours in the day  😳

Jumped into The Witcher 3 for the first time since my initial playthrough; last time I stalled out on the DLC but that maybe was due to the gap between my playthrough and that DLC becoming available. Being an utter weirdo, I don't play games with their sound, which makes a story-forward game like this a bit prohibitive to play. Having fun though; I'm playing on a higher difficulty, which necessitates more attentive combat; it felt easy to spam attack buttons at lower difficulty.

that's wild! I don't think you're missing too much from The Witcher and subtitles obviously exist. Some games the music and sounds totally enhance the experience.
My wife and I were talking about this earlier in the week - whether listening to music while playing games works. She can't do it, but I maybe can depending on what the game is.

I used to do that sometimes when I was younger just wandering around playing Fallout 3, New Vegas, and/or Skyrim just exploring. But I normally turned it off when I was doing story quests. It definitely depends on the game. Something non-story like a sports game or FPS is totally fine too.

It works for gameplay-focused games, arcade-like games or my favorite: the soulsbourne games. I enjoy listening to a podcast during those. I've pivoted towards listening to a record while I play Witcher, though.

My video game time is always also music time. I feel bad because I do like a lot of vgm but I also like using video games as a way to focus on music and keep my hands busy. Depending on the game I’ll keep the volume up for spoken dialogue but turn off in game music, besides that my gaming tv is always on mute

I do this same thing. Balatro is the hall of fame game for this.

See I'm stupid and got addicted to DbD which is very hard to play seriously without clear sound. My last.fm scrobbles have been light for a bit now, but I try to keep up musically.

my rule of thumb is to play random background music while playing games if I’ve already played the story/campaign before or in certain situations where the game ost can get annoying.

best example i can think of is the first Fire Emblem game where there are 25 maps, and in 24 out of those, the same song plays all throughout, and because it’s an old ass game, you spend at least an hour or two in each map.
