February 2021 Challenge (& Raffle)

Thurs 18 – Axe hero
Spin a record by your ultimate guitar hero

Wow, there are so many guitar players I've admired over the years. My first favorite and lifelong guitar hero is Jimmy Page, but today I'll go with FZ, who is just plain brilliant, and shreds to boot.

I think a fun thread would be 30 days of people's favorite/most beloved/most influential guitarists, I'd love to see everyone's lists.

I'm going with a recent bargain. Found the blue edition of Lana del Rey's album "Norman fucking Rockwell" on dodax for 21€, while it was sold out in other shops and on discogs would've been at least 50€ for me. Even the regular black edition is hard to get in Germany by now, so I was very happy about that. Wonderful album, great pressing.

Otis Redding - Complete and Unbelievable: The Dictionary of Soul

This copy includes both the Mono and Stereo versions of this album and a 7" and usually goes for around $35+. I grabbed this copy in mint condition for $10 from Discogs! I'm not sure why it was listed so low, but I scooped it up as soon as I saw it haha

I'm not much of a bargain hunter. So I will spin something I had no idea that would be so popular.

Paid $20 for this, even kept the receipt.

There are a few LPs that I was lucky enough to score when the initially were released that now go for a pretty penny but this one was one of those moments of kismet. Pre-COVID Half Priced Books was one of my favorite place to browse records, most of the time things were obscenely overpriced for a beat up copy of some classic rock LP’s but every once in a while their lack of interest in vinyl would work out in my favor. I have scored lots of deals there, though usually nothing epic but this time was one of the exceptions. Their vinyl area as a whole is rather small and of that 3/4th of it is made up of overpriced Jazz and Classic Rock titles but they do have some tiny sections dedicated to other genres, Metal, Indie, Electronic, Country, and Rap. Their rap section mostly consists of a few recent reissues intermingled with some beat up 12” DJ singles, not terribly exciting but this visit aI found this, a vinyl only release that, when initially released went for about $20 and likely when HPB placed it on their shelves it was still in print and going for about that same price but between the time they priced it and the time I purchased it a couple things happened; first, the vinyl went out of print and second the Freddie Gibbs and Madlibs had dropped Bandana which had heightened interest in his previous releases those two factors caused the demand for the LP to skyrocket but HPB never took notice. I think when I picked it up for around $18 (I had a coupon) the median “sold price” on Discogs what’s right around $120. I was so excited while checking out I couldn’t help but point out the coup I had just scored to the cashier who gave a polite “yeah, neat” when presented with the info while wrapping up the transaction.

I used to do a lot of thrifting when I got back into records about ~11-15 years ago...pre-"vinyl boom"

There were a lot of "scores" back then, LZII RL cut, first thrift store MoFi of Alan Parsons Project - I Robot....etc.

But this is one I got from an old high school classmate. She saw that I was into records and ask me if I wanted some...I said sure not expecting much...and there wasn't a lot worth keeping. A Jaws soundtrack was the other thing I have, the rest went to Goodwill. But this caught my eye in her photo. It looked interesting and not something that I had seen before, so I knew it wasn't the usual Goodwill fodder.

It is a private press of some singer/songwriter folk/country-ish...it's interesting. Recorded in Pekin, Illinois. The band is supposedly from Indiana, but I can't find a ton of legit info on them.

It doesn't tend to go for crazy prices, but it has in the past. I paid maybe up to 10 bucks for shipping for the lot of 10 or so records she sent.

Day 19 - ‘Ow much?

I think what I’ve chosen for this type of topic before in challenges was my $5 OG Pretty Hate Machine. This one wasn’t as cheap, but considering condition and what it’s worth now, probably even more of a steal.

I got this Music Matters Real McCoy for $34 bucks sealed from Amoeba in 2017. It was a great deal then (well below MSRP) but now it goes for $200 plus.

Day 19 - 'ow much?

Van Morrison - Moondance
Blind Faith

Two of my better £1 buys, as they both transpired to be first pressings. I bought a fair number of records in the 2000s for very little - for a long time I'd paid under £10 for every single disc I had. OG Sticky Fingers and Electric Ladyland among others (still annoyed I got rid of a £5 OG Revolver, although it wasn't in the best condition). Sadly that limit has since been breached...

Fri 19 –‘Ow much? Part I

This is tough. I never remember what I pay... and frankly, most of the time, I just don't want to remember. LOL.

But I know this was a cheap record, around C$5, one of the first that I bought during the late 90's when I got back into collecting after a long hiatus. I was amazed at how clean it was when I took it home. Nice pressing.
